Take some time away with loved ones to rest and relax during Spring Break surrounded by plenty of sand, sun, water, and loads of fun. Head to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, and Cape Hatteras. Everyone in the group will find something to enjoy during a well-deserved respite. Relax and unwind indoors or out, with a myriad of Cape Hatteras activities to choose from.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

The over 70 miles of seashore is protected and preserved by the National Park Service. It stretches from Bodie Island to Ocracoke Island. Also known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” you may find some old shipwrecks that can be fun to explore with the right touring company. The park’s fishing and surfing conditions are considered some of the best on the East Coast of the U.S. and you’ll find pristine waters to swim in by the shore.

Fishing

For the anglers of the group, there are plenty of places and ways to drop a line and try their luck during Spring Break. Charter a boat, stick to shore, or head to the Avon Fishing Pier to see what’s biting. The pier is open 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. and wanders 665 feet out into the Atlantic – fishing off the end will no doubt net some interesting catches that you won’t find if you stay closer to shore. Another great spot is the Rodanthe Pier, where you’ll cast a line in search of sea mullet, spot, bluefish, trout, and many others. The pier is open daily 6 a.m. – 12 a.m.

Bike Rentals

Get out into the springtime air! While you can drive all over the island in your rental vehicle, there are some places that vehicles just can’t go. For those nooks and crannies found around Cape Hatteras, rent a bike to take a cruise through some of the tighter passages. It’s close to the beginning of the season, so if biking is part of your itinerary, make advanced online reservations to ensure you get the bike or bikes you want. Most companies provide helmets with their rentals, but you’ll have to ask about other extras including lights, baskets, water bottles, and anything else you may need for a comfortable trip.

Beaches

A springtime island escape means plenty of beach time. The harsh sun has yet to return to full force, allowing you to stay outside and enjoy the weather longer. Lay out in the sun and sunbathe, get your exercise with a walk or run on the sand, or plant an umbrella for a beach picnic.

If you don’t mind the still-cool waters, take a paddle around on a stand up paddleboard, kayak, or canoe. Check out the pristine marshes and wildlife sanctuary of the area. Up the adrenaline and speed when you take off on a jet ski or take to the wild blue yonder for parasailing. Add in some lessons for a new skill and go from land classes to riding waves on a surfboard or windsurfing equipment.

Beach Horseback Ride

Whether you’re a seasoned equestrian or first-time rider, it’s a “trail” ride you won’t want to miss. Call or email to make reservations with your preferred company, and be prepared to provide ages, height, and weight of riders: it helps to pair everyone with a horse appropriate for them.

Hatteras Island Ocean Center

Make the center a part of your Spring Break this year. The center is part of the Outer Banks National Scenic Highway, which stretches across Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke Islands, Down East, and the Pamlico Sound. It’s a great stop along the route for nature lovers of all ages and is within walking distance of central Hatteras Village! Explore on a kayak nature tour, join the “Turtle Patrol” and learn about the area’s sea turtles, or learn about birding in the barrier islands. Visit their website first to confirm hours and available activities. You may need special reservations.

Hatteras Weather Bureau Station

Built in 1901, the station was in active use 1902-1946. It provided data on Atlantic Ocean conditions from a fixed location farther into the ocean environment than any other station on the Atlantic Coast during that time. After being decommissioned as a weather station, it became living quarters for Weather Bureau personnel investigating the area. It has most recently been used as a research station by North Carolina universities.

You’ll find an array of things to see and do, and you’re bound to hear your stomach rumble while you’re out. While there are many brick-and-mortar restaurants ready to serve you, sometimes you need to grab-and-go so the fun doesn’t slow down. You’ll find a variety of food trucks in North Carolina serving delicious eats to satisfy your appetite.

Hoy Lechon

Lechon means “to grill,” and the Rodanthe-based food truck is all about grilling. They dish up grilled pork, chicken, and beef with Asian influences. The Filipino and Chinese owners bring tastes like spring rolls, Filipino BBQ chicken, adobo fried rice, and more to the residents and visitors to Rodanthe. Pick up lunch or dinner, family-style meals, or book them to cater your next event. Find them regularly at the Liberty gas station at the foot of the Jug Handle bridge into Rodanthe.

Taqueria Las Ahumaderas

Head to the area around StingWray’s in Rodanthe for delicious Mexican on the go. Choose from Mexican classics like burritos, enchiladas, gorditas, nachos, quesadillas, tortas. You can also taste seafood with a Mexican flair like fish tacos and shrimp.

Uncle Frank’s Hot Dogs and Barbecue

Make waves in the traditional tastes of hot dogs and barbecue with the Waves-based food truck. The truck serves up creative fixings for hot dogs. Southern-style barbecue with all the fixings is available, too, and you can cap the meal with soft drinks or cold beer. If you’re environmentally conscious about your barbeque, they focus on sustainable, high-quality ingredients for all their dishes. If you want your selection hot and ready to pick up and go, order ahead on their website.

Dizzy’s Ice Cream Truck

A classic ice cream truck, they have dozens of frozen treats to choose from. Choose an ice cream sandwich, or ice cream bars with themes like SpongeBob, Ninja Turtles, Sonic the Hedgehog, and others. Enjoy a slushie, fudge bar, or push pop. They even have Frosty Paws ice creams for your pup on a hot day.

Stu’s Food Truck

The seasonally available truck is often parked near the foot of the Avon Pier in Avon. They offer breakfast and brunch options to start your day or keep you going through the afternoon. The cash-only establishment writes its menu on a surfboard standing next to the order window. Choose from homemade biscuits, breakfast sandwiches, veggie tacos, breakfast tacos, and more in the morning. For your afternoon fill-up, choose BBQ dishes, hot dogs, or their delicious pulled pork tacos.

Hatteras Bowls

Located in Waves near the water of the Tri-Villages is a truck serving up healthy snacks. The truck camps out there all summer long and provides Acai bowls with a variety of toppings, vegan ice cream, ice-free smoothies, avocado toast, and a selection of coffee and tea. The good vibes are included in the price. The Eco-friendly bowls and spoons are biodegradable. You’ll find outdoor seating close by. Wait 30 minutes and head back into the ocean to “hang 10” with the equipment you’ve scored at nearby Hatteras Island Surf Shop. Bike racks and vehicle parking is available.

Outer Banks Food Truck Showdown

You’ll have to hop over to Nags Head on Bodie Island, but you’ll find several trucks in one spot! The annual event includes trucks from the larger North Carolina and Virginia areas. You’ll find independent trucks as well as catering trucks from popular brick-and-mortar restaurants. Taste flavors from American to Asian fusion and more. The event also features live music to enjoy while you chow down.

The grounds surrounding the structure are open 24/7, all year long, and offer beautiful views. The climb of the 248-stair iron spiral staircase is closed due to restoration efforts.

Hatteras Island Ocean Center

The center is part of the Outer Banks National Scenic Highway, which stretches across Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke Islands, Down East, and the Pamlico Sound. The center is a great stop along the route for all the nature lovers in your group and is within walking distance of central Hatteras Village! Explore on a kayak nature tour, join the “Turtle Patrol” and learn about the area’s sea turtles and view active nests, or learn about birding in the Outer Banks.

Hatteras Weather Bureau Station

Along with the area around the historic lighthouse, make sure to add a tour of this historic wood-frame building to your Thanksgiving itinerary. Built in 1901, the station was in active use 1902-1946. The station provided data on conditions in the Atlantic Ocean from a fixed location farther into the ocean environment than any other on the Atlantic Coast at the time. After being decommissioned as a weather station, the building became living quarters for Weather Bureau personnel investigating the area and has since been used as a research station by universities investigating marine invertebrates.

Spa Day

Relax completely this Thanksgiving on your Cape Hatteras retreat. Whether it’s in anticipation of the big meal, or to relax after the big production, book a manicure, pedicure, massage, or body treatment. Select spas even offer a salon where you can get a new hairstyle. Some even offer special men’s services that cater to their specific needs, so everyone in the group can go home rested and rejuvenated.

An afternoon amble on the beach is an absolute must on your first day. The sands cool down thanks to the drop in temperatures and become a welcome contrast to the warm rays of the early setting sun. A tapestry of colors unfolds before your eyes, made up of pastel-colored clouds and the mesmerizing dance of migrating birds skirting across the golden horizon.

As the sun dips and reveals a starry night sky, it’s time to indulge in the local culinary delights. Hatteras Sol Waterside Grill is a must-visit, for a spectacular seafood feast. The winter menu at this well-loved restaurant is crafted with seasonal ingredients, ensuring that any dish you choose will be a delightful surprise. As you enjoy your meal, you’ll notice how a smile of satisfaction comes across your face. The sound of the ocean waves nearby reminds you that this is just the beginning of your winter journey on Hatteras Island, and it’s already been a great first day. You’re eager for day two!

Day 2: Exploring the Natural Beauty of Cape Hatteras

The dawn of your second day on Hatteras Island beckons with the promise of exploration and new experiences. As the morning sun illuminates the vast stretches of the island, your first destination of the day is the iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse! Towering into the sky, this sentinel of the coast has stood watch for years, guiding mariners safely to the shores of Cape Hatteras. Even in the heart of winter, making your way to the top promises a reward of breathtaking panoramic vistas. You’re left feeling inspired by the majesty of the lighthouse to explore more.

Hop in the car for a short drive to the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. During the wintertime, this refuge turns into a haven for a variety of bird species. As you tread softly along its trails, you’re treated to some spectacular sights. Flocks of birds gather in a harmonious symphony, soaring, diving, and playing on the canvas of the winter sky. Their songs and calls reverberate against the stillness of the season and will leave your heart at peace.

Make your way to Dinky’s Waterfront Restaurant for an evening meal. With a menu rich in local flavors, the highlight during these colder months might just be their crab cakes and seafood platter. Nothing beats flavorful fresh seafood to cap off a day spent in the Hatteras Island’s natural wonders.

Day 3: Immersing in Avon Village Charm

Day three calls immersing yourself in the local art and culture of Hatteras Island. Head over to Kinnakeet Clay Studio & Showroom. This studio showcases the talent of local artisans. Pottery and other crafts tell stories of tradition and artistry. Being here will make you feel like you’re in a scene straight out of a postcard or storybook. Every corner of Avon has a story to tell if you listen carefully.

Pangea focuses on serving up casual American fare created with local ingredients and specializing in fresh seafood in a calm, rustic setting with a patio. With its extensive pizza menu, every bite speaks of fresh ingredients and culinary expertise. Indulge in a pizza night on the patio and experience the flavors and essence of Avon.

Day 4: Kayaking Along Pamlico Sound

A kayak ride along Pamlico Sound is just what the day orders. As you gather your gear and head into the water, you’ll soon find how each paddle takes you into the quietness of the area. The rhythmic motion, visions of the vast ocean and the occasional call of seabirds, is an experience unlike any other.

For your daily dose of history, head over to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras Village. This museum, with its exhibits and artifacts, brings to life tales of shipwrecks, pirates, and maritime heritage. As you wander through its halls, stories of bygone eras, of sailors, and of the sea unfold, revealing the island’s rich legacy.

As evening approaches on your fourth day, you find yourself craving a homecooked meal. Day 5: Ocracoke Wonders Await

The fifth day of your Hatteras adventure is devoted to the nearby gem of Ocracoke Island. Check the ferry schedule and be on your way. Soon the rhythm of the waves will take you along your journey. The chill of winter is offset by the breathtaking views of the sea during the trip, offering a unique vantage point to appreciate the beauty of the Outer Banks. As the ferry docks at Ocracoke, the sight of this charming island awakens a sense of curiosity and wonder in you.

Meander through the streets of the town of Ocracoke. The Ocracoke Lighthouse stands as a testament to time, its white facade glistening in the winter. After you’ve checked out the local sights, make your way over to Eduardo’s Taco Stand for some flavorful and authentic tacos! Savor the flavor of these tacos filled with different types of toppings, fillings, and sauces. It will warm you up on a cool winter day.

With memories of Ocracoke etched in your heart, as evening dawns, it’s time to board the ferry back to Hatteras. The return journey is a time of reflection, the shimmering water and fading light forming the backdrop. Back in Hatteras Island, a relaxed dinner awaits at Bros Sandwich Shack. Grab a hearty sandwich that’s loaded with flavors and reflect on the day’s adventures.

If it’s not too cold, you might find yourself at the hot tub. Or you can simply head down to the beach and enjoy some reading or quiet reflection. After an easygoing morning, make an appointment to visit In Touch Massage & Wellness Center located in the town of Frisco. Here, skilled therapists await, ready to melt away any remnants of stress or fatigue. Whether you opt for a deep tissue massage, a refreshing facial, or any of the holistic treatments they offer, you’ll find yourself completely and utterly relaxed. And isn’t that the point of vacation?

Day 7: Discovering the Charm of Rodanthe

Day seven is for making your way to Rodanthe. To start, head over to the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site. As you walk through the well-preserved structures, the tales of brave life-saving crews come alive. Each exhibit, artifact, and piece of architecture tells a story of resilience, courage, and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding those at sea. You’ll learn how the station stands not just as a testament to Rodanthe’s maritime history but also as a symbol of the community’s enduring spirit.

Your afternoon quest will lead you to the pristine beaches of Rodanthe. With the winter winds crafting patterns on the sands and the waves bringing in treasures from the deep, it’s the perfect time to hunt for sea glass. Every piece you find, frosted by time and tumbled by waves, carries with it tales of distant shores and forgotten journeys.

As the day transitions to night, The Wreck Tiki Bar & Food invites you in with its warm and vibrant atmosphere. The menu features an eclectic mix of coastal favorites and will certainly satisfy both your hunger and your culinary curiosity. Choose a seafood platter and a tropical drink for a memorable meal in Rodanthe.

Day 8: Embracing the Sea’s Bounty

Day eight promises adventure during the holidays. As the morning sun casts its golden hue on the waters, you embark on a fishing trip that promises both thrill and discovery. With local charters such as Got ‘Em Charters leading the way, the ocean turns into an open book, revealing its secrets and treasures. Experienced guides and captains share their tales and techniques, ensuring that even if you’re a novice, you’ll likely feel the exhilarating tug of a fish on your line before the trip concludes. Imagine being able to reel in your next big catch during your Hatteras holiday vacation! Now that would be something for the books.

With the fruits of your morning labor in tow, the afternoon unfolds in a delightful culinary adventure. The aroma of grilling fish fills the air, a tantalizing promise of the meal to come. Many accommodations provided by Lighthouse View feature cleaning stations and outdoor grills, allowing you to clean and cook your catch just the way you like it.

As the sky dons its twilight hues, the evening invites you to slow down and savor the simpler pleasures of life. Perhaps your accommodation has a cozy fireplace or a fire pit outside. As the flames dance, casting warm glows and playful shadows, gather around with your loved ones. The evening fills with shared stories, laughter, and reflections, making memories that will warm your heart this holiday season.

Day 9: Equestrian Mornings & Enchanted Evenings

Another unique experience is in the works: horseback riding along the beach. With the help of Equine Adventures, you get to witness the beauty of the island’s shoreline from a whole new perspective. As the waves softly crash, and the sun shines down, feel the connection between you and your new friend. It’s a surreal feeling, almost as if you’re in a movie, galloping alongside the endless stretch of the Atlantic.

Take time to reflect and soak up the amazing experiences you had in Hatteras Island. Do your best to capture them, at least in words or photos. Maybe you nestle into a cozy corner with a journal or share your vacation moments with the world on social media. Preparing each social media post becomes an adventure in itself as you select the right photo and write out how you feel.

The eve of your last day in Hatteras Island calls for something special—a beach bonfire. While the concept might sound daunting, beach bonfires are permitted along the Cape Hatteras Seashore. There is a need for a beach fire permit, and a quick internet search can help you figure out how to obtain one. Nothing beats a warm fire on a cool coastal evening. Gather with your favorite people and recount your epic Hatteras Island adventures. This will be a fitting tribute to an amazing vacation that’s nearing its end.

Day 10: A Fond Farewell to Hatteras Island

On the final day of your Hatteras Island retreat, be sure to stop at the Orange Blossom Bakery & Café. Tuck into a delicious brunch and reward yourself with one of their renowned apple uglies! Their sweetness, best enjoyed with a hot cup of coffee, makes for a delightful start to your day.
