Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Make a stop at the iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The majestic and iconic black and white structure that protects one of the most hazardous sections of the whole Atlantic Coast. The green areas around the lighthouse are open year-round, 24/7, but the iconic 248-stair climb is closed due to restoration efforts. It’s a must for your Cape Hatteras sightseeing list!

Avon Fishing Pier

Although the winter and New Years’ time waters may be a bit chilly for humans to swim in, the fish don’t mind. For the anglers of the group this New Year, there are plenty of places and ways to drop a line and try their luck. Choose to charter a boat, stick to shore, or head to the Avon Fishing Pier to see what’s biting. The pier is open 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. year-round and stretches 665 feet out into the Atlantic! That means fishing off the end will no doubt net some interesting catches that you won’t find if you stay closer to shore. When you arrive, be sure to admire the crooked bends in the pier, a testament to time and Mother Nature’s effect on what is the only operating pier on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore today.

Beaches

A New Year’s island escape means plenty of beach time. The harsh sun has backed off for the winter months, making it easier to stay out and enjoy the day a little longer. Lay out in the sun and sunbathe, get your exercise with a walk or run on the sand, or plant an umbrella and have a picnic or sit and read with the waves lapping in the background.

Escape Hatteras

You came for an island escape from your everyday this New Year. Take the “escape” a step further and attempt an escape room with loved ones. The activity has been growing in popularity, and you’ll want to add it to your Cape Hatteras to-do list this New Year. Shelling

While you might consider any beach activity a spring or summer-only activity, in Cape Hatteras, that’s not the case. Beachcombing and shelling in the cape this time of year brings unique finds you may not see the rest of the year. Winter storms dislodge and kick up more unique shells and wash them ashore. Make your way to the beach just after one of these storms, as the pickings will be fresh. Another optimum time is the hours following low tide. Find gems like North Carolina’s state shell: the scotch bonnet, Eastern murex, and whelks, which are often mistaken for conch shells.

Bike Rentals

While you can hop in your rental vehicle and drive around the island, there are some places a rental vehicle just can’t go. For those nooks and crannies around Cape Hatteras, rent a bike and go cruising. Many companies offer off-season pricing, making it easier and less expensive to rent the bike you want. Most companies offer helmets with their rentals, but you’ll have to ask about other extras like lights, baskets, water bottles, and anything else you may have on your bike at home.

Their songs and calls reverberate against the stillness of the season and will leave your heart at peace.

Make your way to Dinky’s Waterfront Restaurant for an evening meal. With a menu rich in local flavors, the highlight during these colder months might just be their crab cakes and seafood platter. Nothing beats flavorful fresh seafood to cap off a day spent in the Hatteras Island’s natural wonders.

As the ferry docks at Ocracoke, the sight of this charming island awakens a sense of curiosity and wonder in you.

Meander through the streets of the town of Ocracoke. The Ocracoke Lighthouse stands as a testament to time, its white facade glistening in the winter. After you’ve checked out the local sights, make your way over to Eduardo’s Taco Stand for some flavorful and authentic tacos! Savor the flavor of these tacos filled with different types of toppings, fillings, and sauces. It will warm you up on a cool winter day.

With memories of Ocracoke etched in your heart, as evening dawns, it’s time to board the ferry back to Hatteras. The return journey is a time of reflection, the shimmering water and fading light forming the backdrop. Back in Hatteras Island, a relaxed dinner awaits at Bros Sandwich Shack. Grab a hearty sandwich that’s loaded with flavors and reflect on the day’s adventures.

Day 6: Relax and Refresh

Here, skilled therapists await, ready to melt away any remnants of stress or fatigue. Whether you opt for a deep tissue massage, a refreshing facial, or any of the holistic treatments they offer, you’ll find yourself completely and utterly relaxed. As the waves softly crash, and the sun shines down, feel the connection between you and your new friend. It’s a surreal feeling, almost as if you’re in a movie, galloping alongside the endless stretch of the Atlantic.

Take time to reflect and soak up the amazing experiences you had in Hatteras Island. Do your best to capture them, at least in words or photos. Maybe you nestle into a cozy corner with a journal or share your vacation moments with the world on social media. The eve of your last day in Hatteras Island calls for something special—a beach bonfire. While the concept might sound daunting, beach bonfires are permitted along the Cape Hatteras Seashore. There is a need for a beach fire permit, and a quick internet search can help you figure out how to obtain one. Nothing beats a warm fire on a cool coastal evening. Gather with your favorite people and recount your epic Hatteras Island adventures. This will be a fitting tribute to an amazing vacation that’s nearing its end.

OBX Wind

While the Outer Banks is known for fishing, the islands are also a great place for water sports. During your Halloween escape, take in the contest that is billed as one of the biggest windsurfing events in the country! The annual Wind Competition brings windsurfers or all skill levels together for fun on the water, and a friendly competition on the water. The event is perfect for your Halloween calendar, running Saturday, October 28 – Saturday, November 4, 2023.

Trunk or Treat

Enjoy Halloween in a safe environment. The event takes place in the spacious parking area of the Beach Klub at Koru Village in Avon, next to the Avon Pier. Cars will be decked out in spooky décor, and offering candy and treats of all varieties. Kids and adults are encouraged to dress in their spooky best to attend the free event. The event takes place 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31.

Beaches

A Halloween island escape means plenty of beach time. The harsh sun has backed off a bit, making it easier to stay out and enjoy the day a little longer. Lay out in the sun and sunbathe or stay active and get your exercise with a walk or run on the sand. If ultimate relaxation is your goal, plant a beach umbrella and have a picnic or sit and read with the waves lapping in the background.

Water Activities

In addition to the many beach activities that attracted you to Cape Hatteras for your Halloween adventure, there are other fun water sports to experience while you’re here, too. If you don’t mind the cooler water, you and your loved ones can paddle your way through on a stand up paddleboard, kayak, or canoe. Check out the pristine marshes and wildlife sanctuary of the area. Up the adrenaline and speed when you take off on a jet ski or take to the skies for a parasailing adventure. Add in some lessons for a new skill while you’re at it: certified surf instructors will take you from land classes to catching your first wave on a traditional surfboard or windsurfing equipment. Once you’re comfortable with your skills, rent some gear and plan your own adventure!

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

The majestic black and white structure protects one of the most hazardous sections of the whole Atlantic Coast. The grounds surrounding the structure are always open, all year long. Come for breathtakingly beautiful views, but you’ll have to return to take part in the climb of the 248-stair iron spiral staircase – it is closed for restoration.

Hatteras Island Ocean Center

The center is part of the Outer Banks National Scenic Highway, which stretches across Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke Islands, Down East, and the Pamlico Sound. The center is a great stop along the route for nature lovers. For those not taking the scenic route, it is within walking distance of central Hatteras Village! Explore on a kayak nature tour, join the “Turtle Patrol,” and learn about the area’s sea turtles and view active nests, or learn about birding in the barrier islands.

Hatteras Weather Bureau Station

Along with the area around the historic lighthouse, make sure to add a tour of this historic wood-frame building to your itinerary. Built in 1901, the station was active from 1902 to 1946. Throughout that time, it provided data on conditions in the Atlantic Ocean from a fixed location farther into the ocean environment than any other on the Atlantic Coast at the time. Once decommissioned as the official weather station, the building became living quarters for Weather Bureau personnel investigating the area. It has since been used as a research station by universities investigating marine invertebrates.

Spa Day

Enjoy complete relaxation this Halloween on your Cape Hatteras retreat. Book a manicure, pedicure, massage or body treatment. Even a new hairstyle can reinvigorate, relax, and refresh you! Some salons and spas in the area even offer special men’s services that cater to their specific needs, so everyone in the group can go home rested and rejuvenated.

Relax and unwind indoors or out or find something fun and exciting to do on-shore or off-shore no matter how busy you want to be during your Cape Hatteras vacation.

Avon Fishing Pier

Although the waters may be a bit chilly for humans to swim in – it steadily cools from the 80s to the mid-60s for the fall months – the fish don’t mind. For the anglers of the group, there are plenty of places and ways to drop a line and try their luck. Charter a boat, stick to shore, or head to the Avon Fishing Pier to see what’s biting. The pier is open 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. and wanders 665 feet out into the Atlantic. Fishing off the end will no doubt net some interesting catches that you won’t find if you stay closer to shore. When you arrive, be sure to admire the crooked bends in the pier, a testament to time and Mother Nature.
