Spring Journey to Cape Hatteras

HomeJourneys to Cape HatterasSpring Journey to Cape Hatteras

In many places in the world, spring can be just a continuation of winter, but in Cape Hatteras, it is the promise of something special. The Cape offers a quiet respite that soothes the soul after the winter holidays. This guide to all the spring things to do around Cape Hatteras will make you even more eager to start your spring journey.

Why Spring in Buxton Feels Quieter

Spring break rowdiness really isn’t much of a thing in Buxton. It’s the shoulder season, and so beaches like Old Lighthouse Beach and Cape Point will be quieter. That’s not to say, however, that there won’t be a lot of Cape Hatteras things to do during your stay; it just means your adventures will be that much more peaceful and fun.

Our spring break often revolves around families, so if you do run into others during your beach days, chances are they will be families with young kids like yours. As you explore the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in the spring months, you will derive extra happiness when you come home to our Hatteras Island weekly rentals.

What Is the Weather Like in the Spring?

The earlier you arrive in the spring, the cooler it will be, but don’t let that stop you from planning a late March or early April trip. Cool is subjective, and for our guests who live in colder climes, the 50-degree weather at this time will feel like a much-needed heatwave. You will still want to explore all the things to do around Cape Hatteras, both indoors and out, and you will still feel cozy and comfy as you do. Temperatures will rise with each successive day, week, or month, and by the end of spring, you may feel like you have begun your summer vacation. In any month, however, it will be breezy, perfect for flying kites. (Kitty Hawk Kites in Hatteras sells colorful kites of all shapes and sizes!)

Spring Surf at Cape Point

Cape Hatteras offers something different for every traveler who visits, no matter what season, and Cape Point is the perfect example. It is always changing in shape, due to the constant waves and winds that “poke” at the hook of sand for which Cape Point was named. But the winds and the waves aren’t all bad; it’s a popular place for kiteboarding and windsurfing, one of the most popular outdoor things to do around Cape Hatteras. Surf fishing is also popular at Cape Point, so don’t forget your fishing pole!

Migrating Birds at Pea Island and Buxton Woods Reserve

Spring is also the season when our actual snowbirds return to their cooler-climate homes and when birdwatchers flock to Cape Hatteras to witness the beauty of spring migration. Bird watching is becoming one of the most popular Cape Hatteras things to do, especially on Pea Island and in the Buxton Woods Reserve.

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

The spring migration is at its peak from March through May, so if bird watching is your favorite thing to do around Cape Hatteras, plan your North Carolina getaway and your Lighthouse View retreat during that time. Shorebirds such as red knots, American oystercatchers, and piping plovers are the most prevalent migrating birds, but there will also be waterfowl and pelagic birds (seabirds that spend much of their lives flying, feeding, and even sleeping over the ocean). You may even catch sight of peregrine falcons or bald eagles preparing for their return flights home.

Buxton Woods Reserve

Birdwatchers know that the Atlantic Flyway is an important north-south migration route in North America, but they may not know that Buxton Woods Reserve is an important stop on the Flyway. Home to over 360 species, spring and fall are the best seasons for watching the birds migrate. Songbirds, waterfowl, and raptors are the main birds you will see, and the best spots to view them include the Buxton Woods trails.
