Beautiful weather, stunning scenery, and a large number of paved paths make Cape Hatteras a very popular place for bicyclists, adding another element of wonder to your North Carolina vacation experience, especially with all trails leading back to our Lighthouse View retreats. Offering comfort and making every traveler feel at home in our spaces, they provide the perfect place to relax and recuperate after a long day on two wheels. Today, we want to discuss all the fun you can have biking on Cape Hatteras, offering hints and tips as to the best places to ride.
Didn’t Pack Your Bike? No Problem!
As much as you were tempted to throw everything in your luggage, including the kitchen sink, we can safely bet that a bike was never on your “to pack” list, and that is perfectly ok. Biking is such a popular activity on Cape Hatteras that there are many shops with bicycles on their equipment rental lists, including Island Cycles & Beach Gear, located at 41074 North Carolina Highway 12 in Avon. Renting colorful beach cruisers, children’s bikes, and all the gear you need to ride safely (helmets, bike trailers, bike seats, locks, baskets), your adventures on two wheels are sure to be happy ones. Also offering adult trikes, rental prices are extremely reasonable, allowing visitors to save money for more Cape Hatteras adventures.
Where to Ride
Bike trails are quite common on Cape Hatteras, so you will have plenty of opportunities to explore from the seat of your rental bike, and in some areas, you can even ride on the beach. Our favorite trails, however, lead bicyclists through the lush and verdant beauty of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Located on the northern end of Cape Hatteras, the refuge was established in 1938, serving as a protected area for plants and land, sea, and air creatures who inhabit the area. The clearly marked bike trails that cross the refuge are not the same as the hiking trails and includes the service road that surrounds North Pond. Some areas of North Carolina Highway 12 are also open for bikers, so be sure to check that out as well.
