Cape Hatteras Stargazing

If you are of a certain age, you may have noticed that the night sky where you live has lost some of its magic, especially when you remember nights in your youth. We were used to sitting out in the grass, staring up at the sky and watching the stars light up the night, but today, there just aren’t as many visible stars thanks to increased light pollution, unless you are on vacation in Cape Hatteras. Known for having some of the darkest skies in the world, and although it isn’t an official dark sky community it is on its way and when you sit out on the balcony of our Lighthouse View escapes, you will be instantly transported back to those star-filled days of your youth when you partake in stargazing in Cape Hatteras.

Best Season for Cape Hatteras Stargazing

The skies are dark every night of the year, but the best time to stargaze will be in the fall or the winter, when the air is less humid and the cold ensures there will be less molecules that will block your view of the stars. We admit, we don’t really understand the science of it, but the experts told us about the molecules and the cold thing, so as per the norm, we are sharing those secrets with our favorite people, our guests.

More Than Stars

Even better than all the twinkling of the stars you will be able to see, during some stargazing adventures you may be able to see planets and even the Milky Way, offering an education in the universe that is both beautiful and serene. It’s the stars, though, including the shooting stars that you will be making wishes on, that will make you feel closer to the heavens and that anything is possible.

Hatteras Village Starry Nights

In February, Hatteras Village hosts the Starry Nights program, a child-centric event that teaches our children a love for the stars and although it took a hiatus during the COVID years, in 2024 it returned, something we are happy about and look forward to continuing to participate for years to come. Offering planetarium shows, pre-sky watching soup, and Guided Sky Watching at Sandy Beach, there will be telescopes and educators guiding guests on a tour of the heavens.

Bring Your Phone, Grab a Blanket, and Step Outside

The stars will be visible in many locations throughout Cape Hatteras, but on a cold night in the winter do you really want to be far from “home?” Your favorite spot to stargaze may be on the sand in front of your Lighthouse View sanctuary, so bring your phone (there are apps that can help you understand what you are looking at), grab a blanket, and step outside for a night of Cape Hatteras stargazing from the most beautiful place on earth.
