Hiking on Cape Hatteras, NC

One of our favorite activities, after a day at the beach, of course, is hiking along the many trails that can be found throughout Cape Hatteras. Allowing us to get close to nature, some of the best photographs we have ever taken are from these hikes, and better yet, it doesn’t cost a thing to enjoy a beautiful day in nature. We at Lighthouse View have been known to take a morning to explore the North Carolina hiking trails listed below, and we invite you to check them out yourself—and please, don’t forget to stay hydrated, especially during a summer hike!

The Bodie Island Lighthouse Boardwalk and Viewing Platform

The beauty of the Bodie Island Lighthouse is what you will notice most from this quick and easy hike. Lasting just under half a mile, it only takes around 7 minutes to complete the hike, ending at the Viewing Platform for the lighthouse and encouraging family photos to be taken with the lighthouse in the background. Memorable, easy, and destined to become one of your top 10 favorite hikes, the elevation gain is just 3 feet, and even your tiniest travelers should be able to manage the hike as well!

Lighthouse Pathway

This 1.5-mile-long walk (3 miles in and out) is much closer to “home,” bringing visitors to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that you can see from your Lighthouse View accommodations. Paved and meant to be used for hiking on Cape Hatteras, jogging, and biking, this trail is a new one, opening for public use in 2024.

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

As you might have expected we are bringing you back to one of our favorite places, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge for a hike that will bring peace and joy to your vacation adventures. The North Pond Wildlife Trail is an easy hike, taking about 20 minutes to complete the 1.2-mile-long hike through some of the Outer Banks’ most beautiful natural landscapes and providing a peek into the world of the wildlife that inhabits this area.

Shoreline Wanderings

You don’t have to put on hiking boots to complete one of the most beautiful hikes on Cape Hatteras and even as it may feel like a simple stroll, the health benefits are amazing and the mental health benefits of a walk along the shoreline at any time of the day or night will make you consider moving to the beach permanently. If you aren’t at that point in your life yet, however, your week on the beach in our Lighthouse View escapes will make a fantastic placeholder. Reserve your favorite today!
