Kiteboarding in North Carolina on Cape Hatteras

HomeVacation PlanningActivities on Cape HatterasKiteboarding in North Carolina on Cape Hatteras

The water adventures you can experience during your Cape Hatteras vacation are varied and exciting, ranging from the simple (wading in salty waters) to the extreme (kiteboarding, of course), and every adventure in between is sure to make this North Carolina getaway stand out in a “sea” of vacations! Today, we at Lighthouse View want to take a few minutes of your time to explore kiteboarding in North Carolina, a relatively new way to surf, using a modified surfboard and kite. And as you fly across the waters while engaging in your new favorite sport, you may catch glimpses of your vacation sanctuary, waiting to provide you comfort and rest!

What Is Kiteboarding?

Emerging in the 1990s, kiteboarding (also called kitesurfing) is an exciting water sport powered by wind and the use of a large kite to skim across the water. Similar to but probably far easier than windsurfing, in which you use a sail attached to a modified surfboard to propel yourself across the waters, the kiteboarding sport entered the Olympics for the first time in 2018, cementing it as an acknowledged and much beloved water sport.

Kite Club Hatteras, 40159 North End Road in Avon

Now that you know a little bit about the sport and are interested in learning, visiting Kite Club Hatteras, located in nearby Frisco, should be what you do next. Offering beginner kiteboard classes that will help you gain control of the kite and start skimming the water a lot faster than you thought possible (each lesson lasts about three hours), they also offer intermediate and advanced classes for those who have sampled the sport and just want to get more proficient.

Hatteras Island Surf Shop, 25410 North Carolina Highway 12 in Waves, NC

If you are already quite skilled at kiteboarding and you just need to rent some equipment (lugging board and kite across the miles is NOT an easy task for travelers), a visit to Hatteras Island Surf Shop should be the next item on your agenda. This laidback shop has been our go to favorite for ANY water sports over the years, first opening its doors in 1971 and evolving to meet water sports enthusiasts’ needs with each passing year, offering equipment rentals for ALL the water sports. They also offer lessons, so if you’re intrigued about exploring a shop that has been in business for over 50 years, you might want to take your kiteboarding lessons there as well!
