There are travelers who love to sit and watch the ocean ebb and flow, and then there are the travelers who are never satisfied sitting still when they can be out there grabbing adventure on the salty sea, and if you are the latter, you may decide that surfing could be a fun thing to do during your Hatteras vacation. Offering the opportunity to learn a new sport and to conquer the waves that may have tossed you to the ground during early ventures into its salty depths, surfing in Cape Hatteras has long been a very popular activity, as the waves are consistent and the sandbars along the coast help create powerful breaks that are a joy to ride. And because the only thing better than a day spent hanging ten on Cape Hatteras is a night spent relaxing comfortably in our Lighthouse View rentals, this will be the year you get to enjoy the best of all worlds while vacationing in North Carolina.
Hatteras Surfing Lessons
Surfing is not one of those sports that you can master simply by buying the board and throwing yourself enthusiastically atop it, but it is a sport that once learned is forever loved. Cape Hatteras Surf School, (252) 661-3904, has been spreading the love of surfing for more than a few minutes here on Cape Hatteras, transforming surfing kooks (yes, that is the surfing lingo for a new surfer, not an insult) into surf enthusiasts that will forever be enamored with the waves, the boards, and the memories you made during your first time riding those waves. The surf school offers discounts for each additional student, so maybe this is a sport your entire family will decide to try.
Rent a Board
One of our favorite things about surfing is the equipment. Colorful and decorative, the board is just about the only thing you need, with the exception of a sense of adventure, and Hatteras Island Boardsports, located at 41056 North Carolina Highway 12 in Avon is where you can rent yours. Offering bodyboards and skimboard rentals as well, HIB is one of our favorite local shops that just so happens to also offer surfing lessons (it’s nice having choices, isn’t it?) If you are here during cooler weather, you may want to look into renting a wetsuit as well, ensuring you can stay out on the water longer.
Come Home to Lighthouse View
You’ve probably heard the phrase surf’s up, meaning conditions are favorable to ride the waves, but when you hear the phrase surf’s down, meaning the exact opposite, there will be no sense of letdown because you will get to come home to your comfortable and luxurious Lighthouse View sanctuary!
