How to Get to Cape Hatteras

Figuring out how to get to Cape Hatteras is all part of the adventure! You can enjoy the journey whether you’re planning to drive, fly, or even take a ferry. Here’s what you need to know about how to get to Cape Hatteras!

By Car

Pack the good snacks and get ready for a road trip to Cape Hatteras. The island is accessible from the north via NC Highway 12, which is a major road that provides access throughout the Outer Banks. Depending on what area you’re driving in, you’re likely to take I-95, US-64, or US-158 to reach Cape Hatteras. You’ll be left breathless as you make the drive across the Marc Basnight Bridge. This bridge that connects you to Hatteras Island offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound.

By Air

If you’re flying, the closest major airport to Cape Hatteras is Norfolk International Airport (ORF) in Virginia which is located approximately 150 miles north of the island. Once you land in Norfolk, you can rent a car for the rest of your journey. There’s also the option to fly into Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) where you’ll then enjoy a scenic drive eastward. The Dare County Regional Airport (MQI), located in Manteo, NC, is a small airport for private and charter flights.

By Ferry

Another unique way to reach Cape Hatteras is by taking one of North Carolina’s coastal ferries! There are three ferry routes that connect Hatteras Island with the mainland and other parts of the Outer Banks. These routes are named the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry, the Swan Quarter-Ocracoke Ferry, and the Cedar Island-Ocracoke Ferry. These ferry rides are economical and offer beautiful views of the water, giving you the chance to spot wildlife such as dolphins and seabirds.

Getting Around the Island

Once on Hatteras Island, getting around is relatively simple. NC Highway 12 is the main access road that connects all the villages. Driving a car is the most common mode of transportation, but biking is also popular, especially during the warmer months. Hatteras Village allows visitors to get around using golf carts too!
