So, you’re spending your Thanksgiving in North Carolina near the beach in Cape Hatteras. It’s a beautiful area that’s peaceful, quiet, and relaxing at this time of year. It wouldn’t be a real Thanksgiving without an appropriate Thanksgiving feast, would it? This blog will explain where you can have Thanksgiving dinner during your vacation in Cape Hatteras. You’ll find a rich variety of options with traditional menu options and some you might not have ever had for Thanksgiving dinner. Once you try these restaurants, you’ll want to add them to your Thanksgiving dinners for years to come. Here are some of the best places to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner during your Cape Hatteras vacation.
Good Winds Seafood & Wine Bar
Good Winds Seafood and Wine Bar in Avon is offering a Thanksgiving buffet that features Thanksgiving classics and delicious seafood dishes. Start with a fresh shrimp cocktail and a plate of green salad and toppings from the salad station. Then grab some of the roasted turkey with giblet gravy or smoked ham with mango orange glaze. Is your mouth watering yet? Add sides like roasted garlic whipped potatoes, candied yams, stuffing collards and fresh rolls with butter, and you will be as stuffed as the turkey! Complete your meal with a sweet finish of chocolate cake or pumpkin pie. In order to savor all this deliciousness, you need to make a reservation, so make yours today!

Café Pamlico
Reservations are also highly recommended at our next option for Thanksgiving dinner in Cape Hatteras. Café Pamlico sprinkles plenty of seafood options and fresh new flavors into their Thanksgiving menu. Start with harvest quinoa salad, autumn Caesar, sweet potato crab bisque, and shrimp and crab deviled eggs. Choose an entrée of oven-roasted turkey breast, Southern-style ham, shrimp and scallop with grits, autumn harvest risotto, and crab mac and cheese. Adding their granny smith apple sausage and sage stuffing to every bite just completes the flavor profile of Thanksgiving. The menu is creative, fresh, and no doubt scrumptious.
Lone Cedar Café
Take a little Thanksgiving drive from Cape Hatteras to Nags Head for our next spot. Lone Cedar Café has a Thanksgiving menu that won’t disappoint. Seafood is the star of the show, and even on Thanksgiving it’s all done very well. Highlights include shrimp and grits, bacon-wrapped scallops, and pan-blackened local catch, served up with holiday mains like oven-roasted turkey and chef-carved prime rib of beef au jus. Round out your meal with classic sides such as sage dressing, whipped red potatoes, collard greens, sweet potato crunch, and cranberry sauce. And you’ve come to the right place if you have a sweet tooth. Complete the feast with a slice of Hershey bar cake, key lime pie, banana pudding, or pumpkin cheesecake. All are decadent and divine. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are encouraged. Make a reservation so you’re not standing outside watching everyone eat.
Diamond Shoals
Back in Cape Hatteras is Diamond Shoals, which is sticking to the traditions and keeping the menu simple and enjoyable. Plates of turkey or ham come topped with grilled pineapple and are served with all your favorite Thanksgiving sides. Every meal comes with a choice of homemade pumpkin or pecan pie. If you want some variety and don’t feel like turkey or ham, Diamond Shoals is still offering their full regular menu so you can satisfy your unique craving this Thanksgiving.

Cape Hatteras is a special kind of place that is meant for slowing down and enjoying the rhythm of the ocean. If you’re in the middle of planning a getaway to the coast, you might already be dreaming of the endless blue horizon, sweet sea breezes, majestic lighthouses, and seafood aplenty! Are your suitcases packed already? No? Well then, this is the blog for you. It’s a travel checklist with everything you should think to pack for a trip to Cape Hatteras. We’ll cover apparel, comfort items, and necessary items for any excursions you may take. Follow these tips to pack efficiently and enjoy your visit to Cape Hatteras without the burden of a heavy suitcase full of things you didn’t end up using.
The Right Outfit for the Activity
As with most instances in life, we usually dress for the activity we’ll be engaging in. If we’re going to the beach, we’ll wear a swimsuit. Working out? Active wear? Date night? Dress it up a little bit. We wear the outfit that matches the activity. So, before you consider putting anything in your suitcase, do you know exactly what’s planned for your trip to Cape Hatteras?
Are you here to just lounge by the beach and not go anywhere? (There’s nothing wrong with this option, and honestly, it will be easy for you to pack!) Just gather your swimsuits, favorite lounge outfits, a comfy pair of shoes, and you’re ready.
But for those of us who like to explore and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, you will need to pack accordingly. The goal is to be casual and comfortable, with layers that can be added or removed with the days temperature. Maybe you have a kiteboarding session planned, you’ll want some swim shorts and a moisture-wicking top that can dry quickly while protecting your skin from the salty water as you surf. Or you might be kayaking or paddleboarding along the Pamlico Sound. Water shoes, adequate sun protection, and breathable shirts and pants can keep you from overheating.

Cape Hatteras evenings often call for a cozy hoodie or a lightweight windbreaker. This is especially true if you plan on sitting around a bonfire or taking a late-night walk on the beach. Choose the right shoes that can support you during any adventure. Sturdy sandals or tennis shoes can be great for exploring local nature preserves, walking the boardwalk, or exploring the neighboring towns of the Outer Banks. Your feet will thank you and your plans won’t be ruined by a day wearing bad shoes.
Practical Comfort Items You’ll Be Grateful For
Comfort items can make your visit feel more relaxed. Don’t forget your travel toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, hair products, toothbrush and paste, sunscreen, contact solution, skincare, and makeup. These items will keep you looking and feeling your best on Cape Hatteras. And you won’t have to make an extra trip to the store because you forgot something! Contain phone, camera and other device chargers in one handy pouch so you don’t leave them behind.
Consider also bringing a book or Kindle to read as you lounge by the beach. Instead of being forced to endlessly scroll on your phone, you can fill your mind with a good story as you soak up a beautifully blue ocean view. A portable beach blanket or camp chair that can set up easily will make moments by the water even easier.
Also, a reusable insulated water bottle is worth its space in your bag. Stay hydrated for all your Cape Hatteras activities. A dry pouch or waterproof bag is another good thing to have. This will be great at keeping your phone, wallet, and keys safe from water and sand.
Bug spray is another item you might not be thinking of bringing, but it can come in handy when you’re out in nature, fishing, or hiking along marsh trails.
Are you in town to fish? If you find yourself on a fishing excursion, you’ll be happy you packed a portable cooler to keep you catch fresh. This can also come in handy for bringing food items to the beach or packing drinks for time out on the water.

It’s true that the majority of people think of summer as the ideal time to get away to Cape Hatteras, wanting that summer beach life and knowing it will be as dreamy as they imagined, but we at Lighthouse View want to tell you that there is another season, just as wonderful that will surprise you and delight you. Fall might be our favorite season, offering mild temps early in the season and allowing you to extend your summer adventures. Cool days and crisp nights follow later in the season, reminding you of all the ways this beautiful season is certain to be one of your favorites as well. Knowing that our Lighthouse View seasonal sanctuaries will be a soft place to land at the end of every autumn day will make this vacation even more special. This guide to planning a perfect Cape Hatteras fall getaway will help you do it right!

First, Let’s Discuss the Benefits of a Fall Journey to Cape Hatteras
Once the last of the Labor Day travelers have exited the island, the vibe of Cape Hatteras changes, softens, relaxes. In real life, September is the start of back to school, the holiday season, and all the chaotic craziness that is pretty much standard in all our lives, but in Cape Hatteras, it is the start of the off-season. The beaches are empty of crowds, the restaurants offer shorter wait times, and the residents come out to play.
As we mentioned above, the early part of the season is still quite summery, offering the opportunity to deepen your summer tan, recharge your soul with all the serenity of the sea, and splash in the surf as much as you want, you’ll just have less people around to get in the way of all the fun you are having. At the restaurants, the tables will be filled with residents, the prices on the menus may be lower, and your server may have the time to offer up some hints and tips on all the best places to see! It truly is a more relaxed time and on an island that is known to be carefree and laidback, that is really saying something!
Exploring the Fall Festivals of the Outer Banks
As the days grow cooler, some of our favorite festivals and events begin to appear, and if you are flexible on your fall vacation time, you may want to plan your days around the events we have listed below. These events will be found all over the Outer Banks, giving you the opportunity to see more of our personal paradise and perhaps fall deeper in love with the region. And even if you tend to be a fly by the seat of your pants type of traveler, the events listed below will surely convince you of the importance of doing some planning ahead of time!
Hatteras Island Surf Fishing Challenge, End of September on Hatteras Island
We’re sticking close to your Lighthouse View retreat for this first fall event, the Hatteras Island Surf Fishing Challenge. Our island home is world renowned for being one of the top surf fishing spots, and the opportunity to do so may bring substantial cash benefits if you choose to enter this fantastic competition. Starting at 11:59 PM on Friday, participants will fish around the clock until noon on Sunday, and during those hours all you have to do is reel in the heaviest fish of these four species: bluefish, black drum, sea mullet, and pompano. The five heaviest of each of the four species will earn their place on the leaderboard, as well as bring home a quite substantial “paycheck!” A complimentary award dinner will be enjoyed by all, prepared, served, and cleared away by Hatteras Island Meals, a local food charity group.
Duck Jazz Festival, Mid-October in Duck
Generally held the second weekend in October, the Duck Jazz Festival is everything you expect it to be and so much more. For two full days, Town Park in Duck is the site of cool jazz, happy people, and yes, even happy kids as they offer a Children’s Story Time, Rhythm and Play, as well as a Movie on the Green. Unlike other festivals, you can bring chairs, coolers, and your well-behaved dogs, but there will be food and drink vendors if you want to enjoy a taste of the town. And although the festival is technically only two days long, special events will take place throughout the town starting on Thursday night, so be sure to explore the Duck Jazz Festival website to see what interests you if you are in town that entire week!

Outer Banks Seafood Festival, Mid-October in Nags Head
If you like to “eat like a local and drink like a fish,” (Yes, that’s the theme of this delicious festival!) you need to plan your visit to Cape Hatteras for the middle of October (October 18th in 2025). Local restaurants will be serving the most delicious seafood in the world, all sourced from the waters that surround us, as local breweries and wineries provide the best in libations. Also offering a bit of education, there will be talks presented about water safety, the importance of keeping our waters unpolluted, and why we must worry about the endangered sea turtles throughout the day, as well as many more topics. Do you like to shop? The list of vendors include local beach shops, artists, and crafts people, and we are sure you will find something to bring home with you. Finally, live music will be playing throughout the day, so you can sing along and dance with your favorite tunes as you shop, drink, and eat!
Welcome Home to Lighthouse View
So now that you have an idea of why planning ahead is a good idea for your fall journey to Cape Hatteras, let’s take a closer look at your home for the duration of your Outer Banks vacation. Lighthouse View has been the place to stay for nearly 75 years, although we looked a bit more humble back in those days. Known as Lighthouse View Court, there were just three small rentals on the ocean, giving visitors a place to rest and relax in between their beachy adventures. Today, we have expanded dramatically, offering hotel rooms, spacious suites, and charming cottages that reflect the magic of the Outer Banks while welcoming tired travelers who fly in from all over the world.
Rooms with a View
The somewhat cooler weather in the early fall and substantially cooler weather later in the season may have you wanting to open the windows and let in salt air and the sounds of the surf, especially as you will have the most stunning views of sand and sea. Salt air breezes will give your room the scent of serenity and Adirondack chairs on the deck just outside the window will become your greatest obsession. Sitting out here, day or night, with your favorite beverage in hand and the ever changing seascape in front of you will give you moments of such total and complete peace, you will want to hold on tightly to each memory made.
When you finally can tear yourself away from the view, barely able to keep your eyes open, climbing into our cloud-soft beds won’t bring the end of the views; they will just reappear in the form of happy dreams every night of your stay. Our rooms are comfortable and convenient, offering full baths, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffee makers, but will you remember much more than the feelings you felt and the views you captured in your memory banks and does it really matter if you don’t?

Home Suite Home
Our suites crank up the comfort and convenience to the next level of perfection, offering those same views (although a few of our rooms and suites do offer pool views with glimpses of the sea), similar decks, and of course, similar dreams. The differences lie in the size; more space, more beds, equals more guests living it up at the beach, and more amenities such as fully equipped kitchens, dining areas, and full living room areas furnished with sofas and chairs, not just the chairs found in our rooms.
The suites may cost a little more, but when you look at how much money you can save cooking your own meals, (Because really, can you bear to leave this paradise?) you may find yourself saving money while vacationing with a larger, merrier group. Start each day with your own version of pumpkin spice coffee (the stores in the area often sell pumpkin spice creamer that you can add to your favorite brew) and sit out on the deck watching the world come awake around you, cool sea breezes warming the higher the sun rises.
Peaceful Cottages
Your traveling group may be a little larger than what can fit in our rooms and suites or your dreams about beach vacations have always included a stay in a cottage with weathered shingles standing tall against the elements. Whatever the reason, choosing our oceanfront cottages for your Cape Hatteras stay will never be a bad idea! Rent two or more and celebrate family with a beach family reunion and discover what paradise truly is
Even in the cooler months, your days will be spent building sandcastles, searching for seashells, and enjoying long walks along shore’s edge, the surf’s roar providing a peaceful accompaniment to your bonding time with cousins you haven’t seen in years. There isn’t much change in the color of the leaves on Cape Hatteras—most of our trees are evergreens—but the spirit of fall will be alive as you relax, play, and explore all the cozy comforts and modern conveniences that make our cottages our most popular rentals!
Our round cottages offer a unique lifestyle, featuring wraparound decks and panoramic views as well as a fun floorplan you have to experience to believe, but our standard cottages offer their own charms as well; there’s just no wrong choice to be made with Lighthouse View!
Seasons of Fun and Fancy
Finding joy is simple at the beach and even easier during your Cape Hatteras fall getaway, because even if you are doing nothing more than building sandcastles with your toddlers, enjoying moonlit walks with your favorite human, or relaxing on our wood decks letting the serenity of the sea work its magic on your soul, life is better in Cape Hatteras. And before we leave you with the thought of those wonderful fall moments in paradise, we know you won’t want to cook every meal (Are there chores in paradise?), and so below we have provided a peek at some of our favorite restaurants for your dining pleasure.
Orange Blossom Bakery & Café, 47206 NC Highway 12 in Buxton
Located inside a former motel, the Orange Blossom Bakery & Café is one of our favorite spots for fall breakfast. Offering breakfast sandwiches on homemade bread, their Apple Uglies are what they are famous for, and if you are turned off by the name, relax; apple uglies are simply delicious apple fritters!

The Wreck Tiki Bar, 58848 Marina Way in Hatteras
Sometimes you just want nachos, beer, and views of the sea during your beach vacation, and The Wreck Tiki Bar checks all the boxes, plus a few more! Known for their paninis, which are fabulous, we find ourselves ordering their Blackbeard Nachos every time we visit. We can’t help it, they are addictive, offering a Southern twist to traditional nachos made with pulled pork, beer cheese, and barbecue sauce.
Hatteras Sol Waterfront Grill, 58646 NC Highway 12 in Hatteras
Offering sunset views of the sea, locally sourced seafood meals, and a romantic vibe, this reasonably priced restaurant is a great spot to celebrate a milestone anniversary. If you are traveling with children, however, you will be relieved to know that their kids’ menu is quite extensive, offering all the faves, including chicken fingers, mac & cheese, and a kids’ version of alfredo.

Explore the Beautiful Bodie Island Lighthouse
Our first top day trip will have you getting up a little early, but it’s well worth it. Get your tickets for a sunrise climb at Bodie Island Lighthouse. This iconic lighthouse stands majestically in all its black and white striped splendor, keeping watch over the marshes and waters of Cape Hatteras as it has for many years. When you day trip to this destination early, you’ll be greeted with beautiful sunrise views, as a golden glow settles on the grounds of this park. The view from the top is breathtaking, complete with endless views of the Atlantic Ocean, Albemarle Sound, and Roanoke Island in the distance. Visiting Bodie Island Lighthouse is a calm and inspiring way to start any day trip. You’ll definitely work up an appetite, so go grab breakfast at Grits Grill in Nags Head.
Be One with Nature at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
Just a short drive south from Bodie Island is the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, so this is great if you want to take two day trips in one day! If you love watching wildlife, then be sure to pack your binoculars for this day trip. Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to over 365 species of birds throughout the year. Choose to walk along the various walking trails, like the North Pond Wildlife Trail or the Salt Flats Wildlife Trail. If you want to learn more about the area from experienced guides, consider going on a tour. There are bird walks and canoe tours, perfect for taking in the island from a new perspective.
Spend the Afternoon on Ocracoke Island
Locals would agree that you can’t come to Cape Hatteras without visiting Ocracoke. This fun day trip option is easily accessible by ferry from Hatteras Island. Once on Ocracoke, rent a bike or golf cart to explore. These are the best ways to explore the island since many shops and restaurants in the area have limited parking. Make a stop at Ocracoke Lighthouse which is one of the oldest in the country. We also recommend visiting Springer’s Point Nature Preserve, where you can hike through maritime forests that take you down to a beach. Speaking of beaches, certain beaches in Ocracoke allow for fires if you have your beach fire permit. After a day of exploring Ocracoke, stop for dinner at either SmacNally’s, the Flying Melon or Howard’s Pub. After a great meal, gather around the firepit on the beach to tell stories as the ocean waves sing and the Milky Way shimmers overhead. It’s an excellent way to conclude a day trip from Cape Hatteras!

Planning a big group trip always sounds like a blast until you start trying to actually organize it. You have to figure out who’s really in, where you’ll go, where you’ll stay, and coordinate the dates that work for everyone. It can be exhausting!
Worry not. At Lighthouse View Oceanfront Lodging, we figured out the nitty-gritty and laid out all the details of planning an Outer Banks group vacation to Cape Hatteras so you don’t have to! In this blog, we’ll outline the step by step plan for getting the group vacation in motion and what to do to have an amazing time in the Outer Banks. Ready to start planning? Let’s do this.
Know Your Group So You Can Secure the Date
This might be obvious, but you need to narrow down who is really coming. Once you put the dates out there, you might have to give an ultimatum or cast a vote to see who is really in. This is crucial and will shape future decisions, so you have to know who’s in.
Once you have your dates and group secured, you’ll need to know who you’re working with. Is your group made up of parents with young children? Are there older ones in your group who might need to take things a little slower? Are you all a bunch of adventure lovers who want to explore every corner of Cape Hatteras? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you think of plans and also choose the right accommodations.
You’ll need a home base that gives plenty of sleeping space, breathing room and freedom to come and go easily. Staying under one roof helps keep everyone connected without having to coordinate meeting spots.

Booking the Right Place to Stay
When it comes to accommodations, where you stay can either enhance or take away from your vacation experience. Take your time and choose wisely. Don’t just go for the best price, but really analyze your group needs and the vacation vibe you’re after. Lighthouse View Oceanfront Lodging offers a great selection of beachfront rentals that can host large groups comfortably.
The interiors are spacious, comfortable and simple. Plus, you’ll be right on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. That means actual ocean views, not “I think I can see the ocean over there.” You and your group will have no trouble making yourself at home here for a week or more. Multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, even multiple floors will keep everyone under one roof without cramping anyone’s style or space.
When it’s time to eat, you can create homecooked meals in large kitchens with full appliances and necessary cookware. Dine together, relax in the living areas with games or movies, and or head outside. Some homes have bonus features like wraparound porches, private decks, community pools and hot tubs, and direct beach access. You can make happy vacation memories without setting foot off your rental! Amazing, right?
Plan a Flexible Itinerary Because Not Everyone Loves Doing the Same Thing
Like much of the cities that make up the Outer Banks, Cape Hatteras has a relaxed coastal ambiance. The area doesn’t lend itself to rushing, rather moving at a calm pace. Consider this when deciding on things to do in the area. Instead of scheduling every minute, why not get the groups opinion of a few must-do activities? This can include things like checking out the lighthouse, visiting the Wright Brothers monument, having a barbecue, or taking the ferry to Ocracoke Island. Once you get the must-do items out, this leaves tons of room in the schedule for spontaneity.
Leaving some days open allows those in your group to go fishing, kiteboarding, or even getting some rest. Not everyone has to be doing the same thing. Each group member has the freedom to enjoy the vacation their way. Later, everyone will make their way back to the rental to share the day’s experiences.
Pack Smart
Consider packing lightweight, breathable clothes, sunscreen, bug spray, and a few rainy-day distractions like board games or books.
And don’t forget the basics like extra beach towels, bathing suits, flip-flops, coolers, umbrellas, and reusable water bottles. Thankfully, many of the Lighthouse View homes offer gear like beach chairs and toys so you don’t have to bring too much. Just double check what’s included before overpacking.
Also, do a group grocery run early in the trip. This will help you keep everyone in the group well-fed and happy, without having to dine out for every meal.
Communicate and Delegate
Just because you’re the trip planner, this doesn’t mean you have to do everything. Consider creating a shared document for planning meals and activities, which can eliminate confusion and decision fatigue. Split up meal duties, create carpool groups for outings, and make sure everyone knows what to expect.
Lighthouse View Rentals Will Make Your Group Trip Memorable
Where you stay sets the tone for the whole trip. Choose a great vacation rental that’s central to the best of Cape Hatteras, and large enough to host all of your favorite people in one place. Spend your days together, relaxing, cooking and enjoying beach days on the shore of Cape Hatteras.
Now that you have all the insight into what it takes to plan a large group vacation, why not get started by securing your very own Cape Hatteras vacation rental from Lighthouse View Oceanfront Lodging today?

Watch pro skimboarders take on the shorelines of Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head at the Outer Banks Skim Jam! This event takes place July 25-27, and features talented skim boarders who carve along the waves close to shore. It’s pretty impressive to watch competitors gliding across the water’s surface to meet the wave. Skimboarders from all over the country come to compete, while plenty of spectators line the shores to watch. You might find yourself wanting to try after watching!

Ride the Wind Via Kiteboarding or Windsurfing
As summer comes to a close, why not do it up and try an outdoor experience you haven’t done before! The waters around Cape Hatteras are prime for kiteboarding and windsurfing. This is because of the steady coastal winds and shallow waters. Many enthusiasts flock to this area to windsurf or kiteboard. Why not see what the hype is about for yourself this Labor Day weekend? Local outfitters offer equipment and lessons for beginners. You might just surprise yourself at how quickly you pick up the basics with the right instructor to guide you. The rush you’ll get is incredible plus it’s a lot of fun. Even if you decide that this isn’t your weekend to try, just watching others catch the air and waves just right might inspire you to try next time.

Plan the Perfect Beach Day & Picnic
You can’t come to the Outer Banks and not experience the beach. Plan for some downtime, with a relaxing beach day on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Here you can soak up the sunshine, and the remnants of summer before September comes and we enter the fall season. Pack up your cooler with your favorite foods and treats, grab your towels, sunscreen, beach umbrella or beach tent, and then claim the perfect spot on the sand. All you’ll see is that endless blue horizon, where the possibilities for coastal fun are endless.

Explore the Outdoors at Buxton Woods or Pea Island
Trade in the sandy shores for scenicmost coastal trails and maritime forests at Buxton Woods Reserve or Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Buxton Woods Reserve has trails that will take you through a maritime forest and freshwater marsh. It’s absolutely beautiful and refreshing, giving you the chance to ground yourself in nature as you look for various types of wildlife. For more opportunities to see the native wildlife of Cape Hatteras, stop by Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Birdwatchers love to come here to observe native and migratory birds in the wild. Rent a bike and cruise the area or simply take a nature walk. These are great options for an easygoing day during your Labor Day weekend.
Discover Ocean Wonders at the Hatteras Island Ocean Center
Spend a few hours learning about the coastal world around Cape Hatteras. This is a great activity if you’re traveling with young children to Cape Hatteras. The center offers hands-on exhibits about sea turtles, shorebirds, marine ecosystems, and the barrier island landscape. If you’re up for a little more adventure this Labor Day weekend, the center also hosts guided kayak tours, scavenger hunts on the beach and even ghost crab hunts at night (it’s when they’re most active). The world dreams about an Outer Banks vacation, but you know that the secret to a happy life is to know when to stop dreaming and start doing, and now it is almost time for you to land on Cape Hatteras to begin the vacation you have been looking forward to taking. You’ve made a lot of good decisions in the planning of this trip, starting with choosing our Lighthouse View retreats for one of our Cape Hatteras oceanfront rentals. Knowing that your days with us are going to be blissful ones spent exploring all the fun you can have at the beaches of Cape Hatteras and embracing the serenity that comes with the sea will make this vacation the one you remember forever as the trip that showed you paradise really does exist.

Five Beaches, No Waiting
There are five beaches with lifeguards that can be found along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore—Coquina, Frisco, Ocracoke, Old Lighthouse, and Rodanthe—and Old Lighthouse Beach is the one that is closest to the beach where your vacation hideaway rests. The lifeguards will be there from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so if you are visiting during the off seasons and have young children, you will need to keep a close eye on your kids. The sea is magnetic for people of all ages as you well know and safety is important. In any case, your days on Cape Hatteras will be magical ones as you play on the beaches in all the ways we show you below.
Coquina Beach Adventures
Located about 41 miles away from your Lighthouse View retreats, Coquina Beach is popular with seashell seekers, beach walkers, and those who love to hear stories about shipwrecks, especially as this was the location where the Laura Barnes ran ashore in 1921. The currents are a little too strong for weaker swimmers to feel comfortable, but the lifeguards will make you feel safer and you may discover you love this beach because it is one you can have a bonfire on, after getting the required permit, of course. It’s rare to find beaches that permit bonfires these days, but Cape Hatteras offers multiple beaches in which you can end your day with flames. Also offering restrooms, showers, changing rooms, and a large parking lot makes Coquina Beach a popular one, in spite of its rough currents.

Fun on Frisco Beach
Our next lifeguarded beach you may want to explore during your time on Cape Hatteras is Frisco Beach, located just 8 miles away from your North Carolina sanctuary, making it a great alternative when you are looking for a change of pace, beach-wise. For our guests who brought their fur children along for the ride, Frisco Beach is a dog-friendly beach as long as they are on a leash that is no longer than 6 feet. Equine Adventures, located at 52193 Piney Ridge Road in Frisco, offers 3-hour horse rides on Frisco Beach, allowing couples to make a more romantic dream come true, that of a horseback ride on the beach. If you are bunking with your precious pooch, however, you will need to leave them at home, because horses and dogs just don’t mix. On windy days you may see lots of kites flying, and if you want to join in the fun, Kitty Hawk Kites, 58848 Hatteras Landing in Hatteras offers a large selection of colorful kites for sale. Shell seekers, sunbathers, and swimmers are all drawn to Frisco Beach, so even on non-windy days you will have a great time; bonfires are allowed on Frisco Beach with a free permit as well.
Opting for Ocracoke Beach
Although Ocracoke Beach is only about 33 miles away from your vacation retreat, it does take about an hour and a half to get there from here, so you may not spend much time on its sandy shores. The town of Ocracoke, however, is known for its Ocracoke Banker ponies, descendants of the horses that were lost at sea or abandoned by Spanish explorers during the 16th century, and if that fascinates you, a visit should be in your future. After you view the ponies, your time on the beach may be filled with shelling or fishing, and if you brought your 4WD rental, there are areas that you can get a permit and actually drive on the sand for fun! The currents aren’t as strong here, but the waves are consistent, making it a popular surfing spot as well as a swimmers paradise as well. And yes, you guessed it, bonfires are permitted on Ocracoke Beach as well, but you need the permit here also.

Roaming on Rodanthe Beach
We’re saving what we think of as the best beach for last, so let’s head over to Rodanthe Beach next, located just 20+ miles away from our Lighthouse View vacation rentals. Rodanthe Beach is a more action-oriented one, being the area where surfers, windsurfers, and kiteboarders like to frequent. Lessons for kiteboarding can be had at Kitty Hawk Kites Kiteboarding School, located at 24798 North Carolina Highway 12 and they also offer rental equipment if you already know how to kiteboard and just want to spend a few hours playing in the surf. Rodanthe Pier is a popular fishing spot, and low tide is the perfect time to go shelling, especially after a storm or, if you like a little more excitement in your beachcombing activities, this beach is a great one to search for shark’s teeth. Rodanthe Beach is also another great beach to enjoy a bonfire after the sun has set and the stars come out to play.
Getting Closer to Home on Old Lighthouse Beach
Old Lighthouse Beach is the one that lies closest to the beach outside your Lighthouse View Cape Hatteras oceanfront rental and may be the one you spend much of your time on during your Outer Banks vacation. Named for the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that should be open for tours again by the summer of 2026, this beach is literally within walking distance of your front door. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself sitting in the shadow of the lighthouse some evenings, watching the sun fall into the ocean but not before setting the sky on fire. Another thing you shouldn’t be surprised about is the number of windsurfers and regular surfers you may witness in the waters off Old Lighthouse Beach. Shelling, sunbathing, and swimming are popular activities here and, of course, bonfires are allowed as well.

The Beach You Have Been Waiting For Your Entire Life
As you might have guessed, we saved the beach outside your Lighthouse View escape for last, knowing that you will spend many an hour exploring the beach and all you can do in the waters framed by soft sand and the remnants of last week’s sandcastles. Located just steps away from your room, suite, or Lighthouse View beachfront cottage your best moments will take place right here. Wake early in the morning and watch the sunrise from your balcony, almost all our spaces feature ocean views (although some do offer pool views instead) so you can roll out of bed, fall into one of the chairs, and prepared to be amazed by the views. Build new sandcastles to replace the ones the tides washed away the night before and use one of the plastic shovels to dig a little deeper in the sand during low tide, increasing your odds of finding a really cool seashell. Leashed pets are allowed on most beaches in this part of the world, so long walks at sunset with your favorite fur baby may be when some of your best memories are made, and a bonfire before bed will make more of your vacation dreams come true!
Those Who Know, Know
We at Lighthouse View are constantly surprised by travelers who find their way to the Outer Banks and choose to stay in vacation rentals that are located further inland, not a single ocean view in the mix. Those who know, know that once they catch their first glimpse of sand and sea, they will never want to be far from that magnificence again, which is why you chose our charming oceanfront escapes for your vacation accommodations. And because we know that no two vacations are the same, we offer accommodations options that will help you find the spaces that will fit your family like a fine leather glove, as shown in the paragraphs below.
Room for 4
Small families, close friends, and couples in love will probably choose one of our not so basic rooms, offering the space for up to four guests in our larger ones, and room for a romantic couple in all the others. As we mentioned earlier, there are a couple of rooms that face the pools, but more likely than not, you will want our oceanfront rooms. Offering the most comfortable beds in the state, these spaces will also provide state of the art televisions, microwaves and mini fridges so you can reheat the leftovers from your dinner at Café Pamlico. But the amenity you will love the most, the one that will speak to your heart and fill your soul with joy will be the views from the semi-private patios that look out onto sandy beaches and the Atlantic Ocean.
Elevating Your Vacation Experience in Our Sweetest Suites
More is always better when it comes to vacation sanctuaries and our Lighthouse View suites are perfect examples of this belief. Just as with our regular rooms, most suites will be ocean view, ensuring that you never need to be out of sight of the water that will become your obsession. The biggest difference between our suites and rooms, however, is the presence of a fully equipped kitchen. Modern, full-sized appliances, including a dishwasher, and a charming kitchen table and chairs allow guests to choose to stay in for an evening, enjoy a home-cooked meal, and maybe play board games until the kids are ready to climb into their bed for a long night’s sleep. Balconies furnished with chairs and small tables are the ideal place to sit with a glass of wine, savoring the quiet of sleeping children and the roar of the ocean and as you sit and savor these beautiful moments, the sky filled with the twinkling of a billion stars will remind you of the days when all skies looked like magic and shooting stars were a semi-regular occurrence.

The Beach Cottage of Your Dreams
The dreams you had of a beach vacation, however, probably involved a cottage with space to roam and with weathered shingles on its exterior signifying a battle with the elements that it would always win. You might have imagined your sister and her family joining yours, coming together to play and laugh and retreating to your own spaces at the end of every day. And when you opened your eyes and start scrolling through our website, you realized that our cottages really were your dreams come true. Beach life hits differently and these charming escapes that rise from sandy shores offer the laidback vibe and innate serenity that the sea provides. Wake every morning for a walk along shore’s edge, rolling back into bed once the sun has reached its perch in the sky. Make sandwiches that don’t have to be eaten where the sand blows in the wind, because you know you can be in and out of your cottage in just minutes. And if your hair is a little (a lot) messy, your feet have forgotten what it is like to be enclosed in shoes, and your OOTD is simply a different swimsuit, you will have mastered beach life in all the ways that matter!
