Save the Date

After choosing where you want to go (Cape Hatteras) and where you want to stay (Lighthouse View) there is still one last important decision that you will want to make and that is when can you visit? Not every vacation has to be a summer one (although your summer vacation in Cape Hatteras will be filled with fun and wonder), and you may want to choose to visit when crowds are smaller and the adventures are equally enjoyable. Making your journey to our North Carolina Shores from late April to early June or mid-September to late October may be your best bet, offering beautiful weather, less crowds, and all the toes in the sand time you crave. Because the majority of the tourists haven’t quite flocked to our doorstep as of yet, you may feel as if the beaches are your own and you may discover that shops charge less, and lines in restaurants are far shorter than during the summer months.

Golden Beaches Await

We don’t care how many times you have visited the beaches of the world, ours included, we can pretty much guarantee that once you drop your luggage on the bed of your North Carolina retreat and slip into your “uniform” for the week, (Swimsuits topped with shorts, tees, and wearing flip flops on your feet) your first adventure will be a beachy one. On your first day, you may do nothing more than walk along sandy shores, marveling over the sights, sounds, and scents of salt air, but as your journey continues, the adventures listed below may bring you joy.

Kite Club Hatteras, 40159 North End Road in Avon

Combining the best of two water sports, kiteboarding, also known as kite surfing, teaches visitors how fun it can be to fly and Kite Club Hatteras will be an accessory in the fun. Offering lessons for all skill levels of kiteboarders, including beginners, it won’t be long until you find yourself riding the waves, board under your feet and sail in your hands, adding an extra element of excitement to your adventures on Cape Hatteras.

Outer Banks Kayak Adventures, 101 W Airstrip Road #264 in Kill Devil Hills

Sometimes the most exciting adventures are the ones that bring you the deepest levels of peace, and kayaking through the waters that surround the Outer Banks may be the one adventure that strikes the largest chord. Outer Banks Kayak Adventures offers a variety of tours taking you and your family on wildlife adventures that include birding tours on the Alligator River, sunset kayak and SUP tours, and maybe the most magical of all tours, bioluminescence & full moon night kayak tours. The bioluminescence portion of the tours are actually a chemical reaction of organisms generating light and as you paddle through the waters exploring this natural phenomenon, the full moon shining down on the waters will help bring an added layer of serenity to your tour. For those who aren’t joiners and who may feel comfortable kayaking without guides, Outer Bank Kayak Adventures also offers rentals with all the gear needed for a private adventure you will never forget.

The Fish are Biting

The thrill of pitting your wits against the denizens of the sea is another adventure that often brings visitors to our island home and whether you choose to fish from the shores or go for the big fish with a charter, your catch-of-the-day seafood dinners will be the one you caught yourself!

Surf Fishing

The simplest way to get your line wet is by picking a spot at surfs edge, pack a chair and a cooler, and relax and let nature take its course. Surf fishing is simply another term for fishing from the shore and the best spots on Cape Hatteras for surf fishing include Cape Point, Hatteras Inlet, and Pamlico Sound. A fishing license is required for all anglers 16 years of age and older, but if you don’t want to fuss with a license, you don’t need one to fish from a pier and there are two fishing piers on the Cape, one in Avon and one in Rodanthe. Cape Point is known to be one of the nation’s best fishing spots but we can assure you that your fishing adventures anywhere on Cape Hatteras will be satisfying and exciting.

Charter Expeditions

When the deep waters call you can answer with a fishing charter, that will bring you to where the trophy fish swim free. There are many charters available on Cape Hatteras and you can’t go wrong simply picking one online, but if you need a suggestion, Island Time Charters would be ours. Located at 58080 North Carolina Highway 12 in Hatteras, they are known for their first class light tackle fishing trips. Offering both half day and full day adventures, their goal is you leaving at the end of your charter with a cooler full of the big fish! Got-Em Charters is another popular charter company in the area, offering all the above plus the opportunity to try your hand at wreck fishing, in other words fishing above some of the area’s most famous sunken ships.

It’s Festival Time

The best way to get to know the place you are visiting is to visit during festival time, and when you experience what the locals love, you will fall even deeper in love with Cape Hatteras. The festivals listed below will give you an idea of just how much we love a party.

Taste of the Beach, April 4-6, Various Venues

We Southerners are known for our love of food and your April visit will show you exactly what we have to offer, as April 4 through 6 is when the Taste of the Beach comes to the island. A celebration of Outer Banks food and drink, this festival is sponsored by the Outer Banks Restaurant Association and events within the event include beer dinners, wine pairings, and lavish dinners that will incite a love for the finer things in life. Every year this festival offers something new, so we invite you to discover what 2025 has in store for your taste buds and empty belly!

Wright Kite Festival, August 18-25, Kill Devil Hills

The Wright Brothers had their first big success here in the Outer Banks and the Wright Kite Festival celebrates their accomplishments with color and fun. The Wright Brothers Memorial Walk takes you on a visual tour of their exciting advances in aviation (although, maybe we should call it the invention of aviation, since they made the flight dreams come true.) Offering history, fun, and beautiful kites that will fill the skies with color and charm, this festival has been a local favorite for 47 years.

Not to Be Missed

You are free, of course, to explore whatever interests you during your exciting adventures on Cape Hatteras, but there are a few activities that should not be missed, serving as a reflection of what makes this part of the world special.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, 46379 Lighthouse Road in Buxton

The tallest brick lighthouse in America resides on the shores of Cape Hatteras, standing 210 feet tall and providing save harbor for ships since 1870. Currently in the process of being renovated, tours of the interior will not be available until the summer of 2026, but we still encourage you to stop by to admire and photograph this stalwart structure.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, 59200 Museum Drive in Hatteras

Built to honor those the ships who sank to the bottom of the sea while voyaging on rough waters, this museum makes preservation its primary purpose. There are no entry fees, but donations are cheerfully accepted and when you meander through the great halls of the museum, the exhibits are sure to evoke feelings of empathy for those who met such tragic endings to their lives. The shipwrecks that litter the Atlantic Ocean have become artificial reefs, so they can rest easily in the afterlife, perhaps realizing that their loss provided harbor for the denizens of the sea.

The Restaurants You Will Remember

If you don’t gain a few pounds while traveling, can you really consider your vacation a success? Especially when taking a vacation in the south where comfort food is key and starch, fat, and sugar signifies love. The restaurants we listed below are some of our favorites, but if you come across one that you looks interesting and isn’t mentioned here, go ahead and step inside; we Southerners are known for our cooking and there really aren’t any bad restaurants in the area!

Orange Blossom Bakery & Café, 47206 North Carolina Highway 12 in Buxton

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if you happen to start your day out with something sweet, well, at least you aren’t skipping the meal. The breakfast menu of the Orange Blossom Bakery & Café is filled with house made pastries and muffins, but also offers savory items such as breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and burritos. Want to get a healthy start on those few extra pounds? The Buxton, a breakfast sandwich piled high with 3 sausage patties, 6 slices of bacon, 3 eggs, tomato, mayo, and homemade bread will certainly be a delicious way to do just that.

BROS, 7100 S Croatan Highway #43 in Nags Head

Whether you are taking a midday break or are wanting a casual dinner that satisfies, BROS is, as they proudly proclaim on their web page, seriously awesome. Burgers, sandwiches, wings, and more dominate the menu of this low key but totally delicious eatery and although the owners were raised in Texas, we have forgiven them for their unfortunate upbringing and totally welcome them to the true south. Probably because we can’t help but devour the foods they serve!

Dinky’s Waterfront Restaurant, 57980 North Carolina Highway 12 in Hatteras

Dining out on Cape Hatteras is not an expensive proposition but when you want a delicious and classic seafood meal, Dinky’s Waterfront Restaurant, does cost a little more than the average. We don’t think you will mind too much, though, as you devour fresh and local seafood while watching the sun set over the sea and sipping cocktails while congratulating yourself on a good choice in meals, especially when you order their blue crab ravioli.

Top Vacation Destination for 2025

Cape Hatteras is projected to be one of the top vacation destinations in 2025 and the activities, events, and restaurants we have listed above are a part of why that is so. A beach vacation is always going to be an adventure in serenity and excitement and a beach vacation on Cape Hatteras will hit even harder. Life’s a Beach

When you live on Cape Hatteras, every day is a beach adventure just waiting to be explored, but in the summer months, the main beaches are often a little too crowded for our tastes. Fortunately, there are hidden coves and private sanctuaries that give us our toes in the sand moments we crave as well as some added privacy, as the tourists haven’t discovered the spots we are about to share with you below.

Frisco Beach

The waters of Frisco Beach are warmer than some of the other beaches, extending our swimming season a little later into the year while offering a stretch of sand that is pristine and unspoiled. Located at the southern end of Cape Hatteras, this is the beach we go to when we want some time alone and we can often be found surfing, kiteboarding, even sailboarding on lazy summer days.

Salvo Day Use Area

This beach area is a little further out, located just 21 miles north of Hatteras, and its distance lends it a rural charm. Offering picnic tables and grills, it is a popular spot for family picnics and for sea turtles nesting, offering sawgrass, sea oats, and a secluded feel that will make you happy. Surf fishing is another activity you can participate in while hanging out at Salvo Beach, and your catch of the day can become the meal du jour when you bring it home for dinner.

When in Doubt, Fish

There are certain activities that just make you feel as if you have discovered the secrets of the universe and fishing is one of those activities, especially on Cape Hatteras. Surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, we are actually one of the top fishing destinations in the nation and the spots listed below will help you catch your limit while avoiding the crowds.

Pamlico Sound

Pamlico Sound is a large lagoon, one of the largest on the East Coast, offering some of the best fishing spots on Hatteras. Surrounded by tall grasses, shrubs, and mature trees, it is quite possible to sit with pole in hand for hours and the only living things you will encounter will be sea life and the wildlife that live in the area, including the wild horses that are roam the beaches of Cape Hatteras and are descendants of the first horses that the Spanish abandoned centuries ago.

Hatteras Inlet

Hatteras Inlet is actually one of the most popular fishing spots in the nation, but there are a couple of areas where the water is deep and only the locals are aware of their exact location. Found at the southern tip of the inlet, these deep holes are where the larger fish swim and live and when you catch the big one you retain the bragging rights for years to come; especially when you have the pictures as proof that the big one didn’t get away.

Rodanthe Fishing Pier

Fishing licenses are needed for fishing from the shores of Cape Hatteras and can be purchased online, but if you fish from the piers you don’t need to purchase one. There are two fishing piers in the area, and the Rodanthe Pier, is where we go when we want to spend a mindless day drowning worms. This pier is a simple wooden structure that juts out into the waters making it popular with the Cape Hatteras locals as the tourists haven’t really gotten to know much about its existence. Built to survive hurricanes and offering the Pier House which sells fishing gear, has its own game room, and offers a small market and hot dog eatery, the fish you can catch from this spot include sea mullet, bluefish, trout, and mackerel.

If You Can’t Stop Thinking About It, Buy It

Yes, you are aiming to live like the locals during your North Carolina journey, but let’s not get crazy here, you are still going to want to load your suitcases with as many souvenirs as you can get your hands on and the shops of Cape Hatteras are filled with treasures, including many of the ones we shop at will offer some excellent deals.

Blue Pelican Gallery Gifts & Yarn, 57762 North Carolina Highway 2 in Hatteras

We have to buy gifts too and when we want something special, our cars take us in the direction of Blue Pelican Gallery Gifts & Yarn. Offering the finest examples of local crafts as well as handmade items, and beautiful and colorful yarn so you can make your own gifts, the store isn’t a large one, but we dare you to try and get out of there in less than an hour.

Farmers Daughter Hatteras, 58848 Marina Way in Hatteras

Is there anything more fun than buying a new outfit, one so unusual and colorful that you just KNOW it was meant for you? Whether you need something specific or you just have some spare time on your hands that you want to fill with shopping therapy, head over to the Farmer’s Daughter and explore all the beauty that lies within. Also offering coolers, beach bags, and a wonderful selection of jewelry, shoes, and something extra, your shopping experiences wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Farmer’s Daughter.

Buxton Village Books, 47918 North Carolina Highway 12 in Buxton

There is nothing more luxurious than losing yourself in the magic on the pages of a good book and although there are many reasons eBooks are popular with readers, there are some times that only a real book will do and when that happens during your Cape Hatteras vacation, a visit to Buxton Village Books will help you find exactly the one you won’t be able to put down. Shelves and shelves of new and used books are housed inside a civil war era building and as you browse the aisles you will be walking in the footsteps of history. If you are married to your eBook, however, never fear, Buxton Village Books also sells eBooks and by shopping local you are contributing to the economy as well.

Events we Love

Another way to feel like a Cape Hatteras local is to be sure and attend local events and below we have listed some of our favorite ones. Guaranteed to be crowded with locals, only a few tourists attend and most of those are our Lighthouse View guests that are privy to our local secrets.

Hatteras Island Oyster Roast, Ogden’s Dock, February 15 & 16

Locally harvested oysters are the star of this show and as much as we love the Taste of the Beach event that happens in April, this wonderful oyster roast best reflects the personality of Cape Hatteras. This is where we devour local seafood with our neighbors, catching up on the gossip in between bites of chowder, cornbread, and those savory oysters. Also offering a bake sale, this taste of Cape Hatteras will be sweet and filled with activities that will bring you happy memories.

Ocrafolk Festival, Ocracoke, June 6-8

This next festival involves a bit of a journey and a ferry ride, but the Ocrafolk Festival is a beautiful and fun representation of our culture, making it worth the extra effort. Offering a variety of musical performances, activities, and, of course, a taste of the food that makes this area shine, this festival is the one we wait for all year round and we invite you to explore all it has to offer.

The Hatteras Village Christmas Parade, Dates TBD

Rounding out the year with a small town Christmas parade that has big time appeal, Christmas on Cape Hatteras is an event that the locals enjoy celebrating together, and the Hatteras Village Christmas Parade is generally the kickoff to the season. This parade has been held nearly every year since 1991 and usually has around 30 entries that include floats, classic cars, and marching bands playing your favorite Christmas music; you know, the songs that you can’t help but to sing along with?

A Walk Through History

Southerners take pride in their history and this part of the world has played its part in history in many ways, with the landmarks listed below offering the perfect examples.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, 46379 Lighthouse Avenue in Buxton

Built in 1870, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in the nation, standing just over 200 feet tall. Closed for renovations through 2026, it is still a great spot for taking family photos.

Wright Brothers National Memorial, 1000 N Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills

While not technically on Cape Hatteras, this aviation memorial is important enough to make the journey to Kill Devil Hills, paying homage to the brothers who gave the world the ability to fly.

First We Eat

Remember the crepe you ate on the street corner in Paris? Those tacos you devoured in New Mexico? The barbecue in Texas? Of course, you remember them all, as the foods we eat on vacation are an integral part of the experience and the restaurants you visit during your Cape Hatteras adventures will be added to your list of food memories that will never be forgotten. This list of restaurants the locals frequents will add sparkle to your North Carolina getaway.

Fatty’s Eatery, 46618 North Carolina Highway 12 in Buxton

A good Southern breakfast isn’t fancy, but it sure is filling and the food at Fatty’s Eatery in Buxton fits the bill. This is where we go when we want an “auffle waffle” (a breakfast sandwich with waffles used as the bread) and their special desserts, homemade fresh each day remind us that life is short and we should always eat dessert first. The tourists haven’t found this spot as of yet, but it may still be busy when you visit because we locals can’t get enough of the food they serve! Fatty’s is also a great place for lunch and dinner, so be sure to stop in for at least one meal during your stay.

Buxton Munch Co, Osprey Shopping Center in Buxton

As you spend your days hiking, beaching, and exploring all that Cape Hatteras has to offer, but when the lunch bell rings, you are going to want to take a break from your fun and head over to the Buxton Munch Co for a hearty lunch. This wonderful spot has been feeding us for over 25 years, but be warned, there are a few house rules you will need to follow if you want to fill up on crabcakes, sandwiches or even shrimp tacos. The rules are be nice, be happy, be patient, be mellow and we would like to add one more, be hungry because their portions are large ones!

Hatteras Sol Waterside Grill, 58646 North Carolina Highway 12 in Hatteras

Hatteras Sol Waterside Grill is a seasonal eatery offering stunning views as a side to their seafood meals. Created with ingredients that are locally sourced, parents can feel good about their children eating here and everyone will want to eat their way through their very large menu; try the she crab soup and fall in love and don’t forget to save room for dessert. Their dessert menu changes on a daily basis and every dessert is worth sampling!

Coastal Vistas

One of the most iconic features of Cape Hatteras is its breathtaking coastline. The sandy shores provide a soft, natural backdrop that enhances any family portrait. Imagine your loved ones framed against the sparkling ocean waves, with the sun casting a golden glow. These coastal vistas allow for a variety of poses—whether you’re playing in the surf, building sandcastles, or simply enjoying a sunset stroll together.

For the best lighting, consider scheduling your photo session during the golden hour, just before sunset or after sunrise. The soft, warm light can create a magical atmosphere, capturing your family’s genuine smiles and laughter. The beach offers opportunities for both posed shots and candid moments, ensuring your photos reflect the joy of your time together.

Lush Natural Landscapes

Beyond the beaches, Cape Hatteras is rich in natural beauty. The area boasts diverse ecosystems, from maritime forests to expansive wetlands, each offering unique backdrops for family photos. Picture your family posing amidst tall grasses, with vibrant wildflowers swaying gently in the breeze, or framed by lush greenery that speaks to the region’s charm.

These natural settings provide a serene ambiance, ideal for capturing intimate family moments. Encourage your family to engage in fun activities like a picnic or a nature walk, allowing for spontaneous candid shots that embody the spirit of your vacation. The tranquility of these landscapes will shine through in your photos, creating a lasting memory of your time together.

Scenic Dunes

The iconic sand dunes of Cape Hatteras are another spectacular location for family photos. Their towering heights and unique formations create a dramatic backdrop that adds depth and texture to your images. Capture your family exploring the dunes, playing in the sand, or enjoying a fun day of flying kites. The natural contours of the dunes create a sense of adventure, making them perfect for action shots that reflect your family’s dynamic energy.

Photographing your family against the backdrop of the dunes also allows for creative compositions. Consider experimenting with different angles—capture your family silhouetted against the sky or framed by the soft curves of the dunes. These images will not only be beautiful but also evoke the playful spirit of your holiday.

Historic and Cultural Contexts

Cape Hatteras is steeped in rich history and culture, providing a unique backdrop for family photos that tell a story. While you may not focus on specific historical sites, the essence of the region can be reflected in your family’s experiences. Incorporate elements of local culture into your photos—think about outfits that represent your family’s personality or activities that highlight your shared interests.

A family photo session in a culturally rich setting can capture the bond you share while highlighting the beauty of your surroundings. Consider poses that reflect your family’s traditions or special moments, whether it’s sharing a laugh or enjoying a group hug. These images will serve as cherished reminders of your family’s unique journey.

Weathered Structures

While avoiding specific attractions, consider the charm of weathered structures that may dot the landscape. These rustic elements can add character to your family photos. Think about incorporating old wooden fences, charming boardwalks, or even natural formations into your compositions. Such settings evoke a sense of nostalgia and warmth, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your images.

Utilizing these structures as backdrops can create a sense of depth and contrast, making your family stand out against the texture of the surroundings. Encourage your family to interact with these elements—leaning against a fence, sitting on a weathered bench, or exploring the area together. These interactions will produce authentic and heartwarming photographs.
