Book Direct Day 2026 is the perfect reminder that how you book your vacation matters just as much as where you go. If Cape Hatteras is calling your name, there’s no better way to plan your escape than booking directly with us at Lighthouse View. Skipping third-party platforms doesn’t just simplify your planning—it adds more value, flexibility, and peace of mind to your Hatteras vacation experience.
Cape Hatteras is known for its wide-open beaches, laid-back coastal atmosphere, and natural beauty that invites you to slow down and truly unwind. Whether you’re planning a family getaway, a couple’s retreat, or a quiet solo escape, booking directly with Lighthouse View ensures your stay starts off on the right foot.
What Is Book Direct Day and Why Does It Matter?
Book Direct Day is an annual celebration of booking straight through a trusted local rental provider rather than using large third-party booking sites. While those platforms may seem convenient, they often come with added fees, limited communication, and less flexibility if plans change.
When you book directly with Lighthouse View, you’re working with a team that knows the area, understands the properties, and is invested in making your stay exceptional. Book Direct Day 2026 is the ideal time to take advantage of special savings and exclusive benefits while securing your Cape Hatteras vacation rental with confidence.
More Value When You Book Direct
One of the biggest advantages of booking directly is getting more for your money. Third-party booking sites often add service fees that don’t improve your stay, they just increase the total cost. By booking directly with Lighthouse View, you know exactly what you’re paying for and where your money is going.
Direct bookings often come with better rates, seasonal specials, and exclusive offers that aren’t available elsewhere. On Book Direct Day 2026, those savings can make a real difference—whether that means extending your stay, upgrading your rental, or simply enjoying extra room in your vacation budget.
A Better, More Personalized Experience
Vacation rentals aren’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is great service. When you book directly with Lighthouse View, you’re not just reserving a place to stay, you’re gaining access to a team that can help you choose the right rental for your needs.
Have questions about layout, amenities, or what works best for your group? Booking direct allows you to get clear, accurate answers from people who actually know the property. That personal connection can make all the difference, especially when planning a trip to a destination as special as Cape Hatteras.
Flexibility and Peace of Mind
Travel plans don’t always go exactly as expected. When you book through a third-party platform, changes or issues often require navigating customer service systems that are removed from the actual rental provider. Booking directly with Lighthouse View means clearer communication and more flexibility if you need assistance before or during your stay.
From check-in details to on-the-ground support, direct booking creates a smoother experience overall. You’ll know who to contact, how to reach them, and that your concerns will be handled promptly and professionally.
Why Cape Hatteras Is Worth the Trip
Cape Hatteras offers a vacation experience that feels refreshingly unhurried. Miles of shoreline, open skies, and a strong connection to nature make it a destination people return to year after year. Staying in a vacation rental allows you to enjoy that environment on your own terms. Wake up when you want, cook meals together, and relax without the crowds and schedules of traditional lodging.
A Lighthouse View vacation rental gives you the space and comfort to fully enjoy your time on the coast, whether that means quiet mornings, beach-filled days, or evenings spent unwinding together after the sun sets.
Why Choose Lighthouse View for Your Stay
At Lighthouse View, our focus is on providing well-maintained vacation rentals and a booking experience that’s simple, transparent, and guest-focused. We believe your vacation should feel effortless from the moment you book to the moment you head home.
Booking directly with us means you’re supporting a local business that cares about the community and the quality of your stay. It also means fewer surprises, better communication, and the confidence that comes from working with a team that puts guests first.
Make Book Direct Day 2026 Count
Book Direct Day 2026 is the perfect opportunity to plan ahead and lock in your Cape Hatteras vacation the smart way. By booking directly with Lighthouse View, you’ll enjoy better value, personalized service, and a more seamless travel experience—all while securing a rental that feels like a true home away from home.
If Cape Hatteras is on your travel list, let Book Direct Day 2026 be the moment you make it official. Book your vacation rental directly with Lighthouse View and start looking forward to a coastal getaway that’s easy, rewarding, and designed around you.
As one year comes to a close, we often find ourselves beginning to plan the trips we will take in the next year, knowing how important it is to have something to look forward to and eager to start daydreaming about our next adventure. As we at Lighthouse View love our island home so much, we would like to take a few minutes at the beginning of 2026 to explore all the reasons why travel to Hatteras Island should be on your 2026 travel list—or any other year’s travel list as well! Offering serene beach days, peaceful nights, and all the comforts of home when you choose our rooms, suites, or cottages for your North Carolina accommodation, an Outer Banks vacation also promises to add excitement and wonder to your 2026 adventures.
A Popular Vacation Destination for Nearly 200 Years
The Outer Banks have been a popular vacation destination spot since the 1830s, so don’t you think it’s about time you visited to see what all the fuss is about? Cape Hatteras became popular a little later in time, with its popularity coinciding with the creation of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in 1953, the first national seashore established.
It’s the beaches of Cape Hatteras and the entire Outer Banks that draw people as well as its history, its laid back vibe, and the kindness of the people who live here, making tourists feel welcomed and cherished. A beach vacation anywhere will be one that provides peace and joy to those experiencing it, and for many reasons, a beach vacation on Cape Hatteras takes all those emotions to the next level. Life is better at the beach, and adding our island home to your 2026 vacation travel list will be the one thing that makes the year shine brighter.

Sandy Shores, Sunshine, and Serenity
Our Lighthouse View retreats sit on the edge of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, enabling guests to spend every day within steps of the Atlantic Ocean. As you wake up early in the mornings to catch the sun rising over the horizon or sit with your spouse on the balcony of your sanctuary at sunset with a bottle of wine and two glasses, prepared to celebrate every fiery moment, you may begin to wish you lived on Cape Hatteras full-time.
The Lighthouses Are Something Special
We Cape Hatteras natives are quite proud of our lighthouse, and we at Lighthouse View are quite proud that we have settled within view of the iconic black-and-white tower. At the time of this writing, this breathtaking landmark is closed for renovations, and we have received conflicting reports on whether it will be open in the summer of 2026 as originally scheduled. You can still pose for your family pictures in front of the lighthouse (although it will be unpainted, revealing its red brick exterior, which is something else notable), the interior will be open for touring, and you can even visit the giftshop; you just won’t be able to climb the 257 steps to the balcony until all renovations are completed.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse isn’t the only one in the Outer Banks. There are six lighthouses in total, so if you feel the need to climb steps to the top of one, you have options when you visit Hatteras Island! The Currituck Island Lighthouse and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse are the two remaining lighthouses that are still offering climbing tours, usually during the summer months.
Turbulent Waters Tell Fascinating Stories
As we mentioned above, the Outer Banks has been a vacation destination since the 1830s, playing an important part in American history. The lighthouses of the Outer Banks were built to lessen the number of shipwrecks in the waters that surround our island chain, something you can learn more about with a visit to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, located right here in Hatteras.
Because shipwrecks are fascinating, there are some that still appear visible when the conditions are right. The remains of the G.A. Kohler appear in the sand near Ramp 27 on Hatteras Island, and the wreckage of the Flambeau can be seen in the shifting sands of Hatteras Village, south of Ramp 55. There are only six places in the United States where you can see shipwrecks without having to go in or on the water, and Cape Hatteras offers two such shipwrecks, something that makes the area even more unique when you visit Hatteras Island!

The First Flight Happened Here
The famous first flight of the Wright brothers took place right here in the Outer Banks town of Kitty Hawk, not all that far from Cape Hatteras, and if you are coming all this way, it is definitely worth taking a little road trip to see where history was made. December 17th will be the 123rd anniversary of that first flight, and as you stand in front of the Wright Brothers Memorial, a concrete structure rising 60 feet into the air, or as you walk around the replica of that first plane, the Wright Flyer, you can still feel the aftershocks from the excitement and thrill of that first successful flight by man. We are more than a little proud to play such a momentous part in world history, and reminders that we were first in flight will be seen all over town, and of course, on the license plates of our cars!
The 4th of July Celebrations Will Be Epic When You Travel to Hatteras Island
In 2026 our nation will be celebrating its 250th birthday, and the celebrations in the Outer Banks are designed to honor the big date in grand old style. The Avon Fishing Pier will be hosting the fireworks celebration closest to your retreat with Lighthouse View. Our 13th annual golf cart parade has become THE parade to attend offering over 50 patriotically decorated golf carts driving through Hatteras Village and bringing a touch of whimsy to the celebration of our country’s birthday.
We love that the 4th of July falls on a Saturday this year, allowing us to celebrate on the actual holiday and not have to worry about work the next day. And although there is a parade in Duck starting at 9AM, and on Ocracoke Island, the Old Thyme Parade, sand sculpture contest, and community beach fire is sure to be a smash, you may want to enjoy an old fashioned day of 4th of July fun by spending the day at the beach, barbecuing hamburgers and hot dogs at the grills on our property when you get hungry, then ending the day with fireworks in Avon.
Other Events You May Want to Attend in 2026
There’s a lot of special events that take place throughout the year, including the Hatteras Island Oyster Roast (February 7), the Hatteras Village Waterfowl Festival (March 6 and 7), and the Hatteras Village Offshore Open (May 12 through May 16). Each event offers an authentic glimpse into life on Cape Hatteras, and whether you are devouring fresh seafood at the Oyster Roast, carrying binoculars to search for unique birds in the sky for the Waterfowl Festival, or are contemplating tossing your line into the “ring” of the Offshore Open, you too will feel like an island native, and we can’t think of any better way to welcome you to our world.

More Fishing Tournaments
As you can imagine, living on an island surrounded by water, it is only natural that there will be many celebrations of the sport of fishing. In addition to the Hatteras Village Offshore Open, held in May, you can return in September for the chance to try your hand at surf fishing for the Hatteras Island Surf Fishing Challenge in Waves (September 25 through September 27), the Capital City Four Wheelers Surf Fishing Tournament in Hatteras (October 17 and 18), and the NCBBA Red Drum Tournament in Avon (October 21 through October 24).
Still haven’t got your fill of fishing tournaments, even after all of the ones we have already listed? Don’t worry, there is one last fishing tournament to enjoy before the year ends, and that is the Cape Hatteras Angler’s Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament in Hatteras, held November 2 through November 8. This last tournament of the year is also the biggest, oldest, and most popular one on the East Coast, and if you can’t make it here for any of the other tourneys mentioned, this is the one serious anglers shouldn’t miss!
The Most Breathtakingly Beautiful Spot on Earth
We may be a bit biased as Cape Hatteras is our home, but we sincerely believe it is the most breathtakingly beautiful spot on earth, and as you explore the natural side of our island home, we are sure you will soon agree. Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve, offering about 1000 acres of protected trees, countryside, and wildlife, is where we recommend you go for an even greater appreciation of this area’s beauty, seeking peeks of the wildlife that calls this area home, including more than 360 species of bird, gray foxes, white tailed deer, otters, and two rare species of butterflies, the northern hairstreak and giant swallowtail. A rare moth, the Messalina underwing, also calls Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve home.

Our Lighthouse View Oceanfront Rentals
As we reach the end of our list of reasons you should choose Cape Hatteras for a vacation trip in 2026, you may think we have saved the best for last as we invite you to explore all the comforts of home found in our Lighthouse View coastal retreats! A beach vacation should imply that you are never far from the water, and our spaces live on sandy shores, ensuring that salt air breezes and the roar of the surf will be your constant companion during your stay.
We offer sanctuaries for all sized traveling groups and are reasonably priced to fit into most budgets, something that isn’t often a thing with beach rentals. But it is the comforts you find inside that will convince you Lighthouse View is for you, and as we shine the spotlight on our oceanfront escapes, we know that you will fall in love just as we have with your Cape Hatteras vacation and your stay in our seaside sanctuaries.
You can see the pictures of our spaces on our webpage, but they can’t impart the feelings you will feel when you step inside for the first time, welcoming you to the seashore with bright open spaces, windows that face the water, and comfortable furnishings that you immediately will want to sink in and relax for as long as you can bear to be away from the sea.
Our Cape Hatteras motel rooms are spacious, offering premium beds, state of the art televisions, mini fridges, coffee makers, and semi-private balconies that are where you will want to watch the sunset every evening of your stay. We also feature Cape Hatteras suites, spaces that are a little bigger and offer compact kitchens so you can choose to spend a night or two at home, relaxing with the family.
Finally, there are our Cape Hatteras cottage rentals: large, welcoming, and very versatile, as you can rent two or more, should you choose to bring the whole family with you on your Cape Hatteras vacation. Almost every room, suite, and cottage offer sea views, and all are located so close to the beach, you can step outside, walk down a few steps and feel the sand between your toes.

It’s always the perfect time to visit Cape Hatteras, and if you haven’t yet made vacation plans for 2026, our coastal paradise should be your top choice for a getaway! Contact us today to secure your stay in one of our inviting Cape Hatteras vacation rentals on the Outer Banks.
There are some places in this world that you only want to visit during a certain season, but even though Cape Hatteras is often thought of as a summer destination spot, we want to show you that it is so much more! Cape Hatteras has something wonderful and unique to offer every season of the year, including during winter.
Even though a Cape Hatteras winter vacation will look very different from the summer ones you have enjoyed over the years, the comfort, warmth, and welcoming of our seasonal sanctuaries will not change and will always be one of your favorite parts of your Cape Hatteras vacation experience! The following guide will help create the picture of an idyllic North Carolina winter vacation.
Reason #1: The Siren Call of the Sea Doesn’t Go Away During Cape Hatteras Winter
Every vacation on Cape Hatteras is going to be a beach vacation, even when you don’t spend your days splashing in the surf. The sea calls out to you, gently, softly, and convincingly as the days shorten, the temperatures drop, and the extremely rare but occasional flakes of snow fall to the ground. Below, we have listed some of our favorite ways we enjoy the beaches of Cape Hatteras during the winter months.

Sensational Sunrises and Sunsets
Sunrise walks along the shoreline take place a little later, allowing guests to sleep in and enjoy the warm cocoon of the heavier linens topping our premium beds. Winter may be the only time you will consider wearing shoes as you trudge through the sand, and it will also be a time when you stay well in the dry sand zone of the beach.
As the skies begin to lighten and the first streaks of gold, orange, red, and purple begin to make their presence known, your feelings of joy, happy serenity, and well being will be the same as they are when walking barefoot at shore’s edge in the warmer months of the year. Repeating the activity at the end of the day, watching the same show you saw in the morning, only in reverse, is sure to be your second-favorite way to enjoy the beach when you visit Cape Hatteras.
Just Walk
Sunrise and sunset are both popular times of the day on the beaches of Cape Hatteras, but anytime is the perfect time to just walk, explore, and leave your troubles behind. The beaches look a little different in the winter months, with more sand exposed and less people around, but as you put one foot in front of the other, walking for as far as you can before your legs get tired, you can still enjoy the colorful cottages that sit well beyond the tideline, the sounds of waves crashing, sea birds crying out in triumph when they find their meal, and the quiet beauty of sea oats swaying in the salt air breezes.
For those traveling with children, afternoon is the ideal time to work together to build sandcastles, creating memories that will never be forgotten. We have lived here most of our lives and we still find that our troubles disappear quicker during our winter walks on the quiet beaches, and the photos we take offer a melancholy beauty that makes us eager to print, frame, and hang them on our walls.
Reason #2: Our Winter Events Are Fun and Exciting
Just as you enjoy the winter events and festivals in your hometown, the ones we hold on Cape Hatteras are destined to be memorable, giving guests an authentic peek into what life on Cape Hatteras is like. The events listed below are some of our favorites.

Hatteras Village Christmas Parade, 2nd Saturday in December
The Hatteras Village Christmas Parade kicks off the winter holidays with floats, marching bands, and of course, the man of the season, Santa Claus holding the anchor position in the processional. If weather conditions cause delays, it will generally be held on the next weekend day after the weather clears, but in most years, nothing keeps the crowds from gathering and the parade from parading, helping jumpstart our festive vibe.
There are other events over the Christmas holiday, including Holidays on Hatteras (arts, crafts, music, and tree lighting) at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and Kites with Lights (exactly what it sounds like), which is sponsored by Kitty Hawk Kites and held at Jockey’s Ridge.
Hatteras Island Waterfowl Festival, Mid-February
Did you know that over 400 species of birds have been seen and documented on Cape Hatteras over the years? Did you also know that 250 of those species call the island their home? If you are an avid bird watcher, you probably do know those simple facts and so many more, and may have even already reserved your stay at Lighthouse View in order to be here during the Hatteras Island Waterfowl Festival that is held in the middle of February. Offering the annual Fin, Feather, and Bourbon Social, interactive experiences with birds of prey, a Guided Painting Workshop, and a Duck Calling Competition, along with keynote speakers, field trips, and so much more, this event is a popular one on Cape Hatteras and enhances a winter stay!
Reason #3: All the Fish You Can Catch While Surf Fishing
Yes, we are heading back to the beach for this next activity, and yes, it is something that can be enjoyed year-round, but there are some changes in the winter. First, however, if fishing isn’t something you do quite frequently, you may want to know what surf fishing is. Fishing from the shoreline is what you are doing when you surf fish, and as you relax in lawn chairs you will probably want to place out of range from the tide, you will discover that fishing is equally fulfilling in the winter months as it is in the summer.
Longer poles are used and if you must walk into the surf, you might want to consider renting or buying hip waders to keep the cold water out of your shoes and clothes. The fish you can catch during the winter are different than the ones you might catch in the summer and include large red drum (between 30 to 50 pounds) and striped bass, both of which can be grilled on the barbecues we offer at Lighthouse View.

Reason #4: Exploring All the Indoor Activities on Cold Days
Although it doesn’t get all that cold on Cape Hatteras in the winter months, there may be stormy days, there may be cold snaps, and yes, there may be days when it snows, such as in January 2025, when nearly 8 inches fell! Snow is a rare occurrence, of course, but there will be days when you want to stay inside and play, making your winter trip the best time to explore museums, art galleries, and many other interesting sights. We’ve listed some of our favorites below, but if something else catches your eye, be sure to stop by and check it out!
Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, 5200 Museum Drive in Hatteras
Open weekdays from 10AM until 4PM, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum explores our maritime history, bringing to the surface facts about all the thousands of ships that met their demise in the turbulent waters off the Outer banks. This fascinating museum explores local culture and the difference lighthouses made for the safety of the ships and is one that we recommend all visitors to Cape Hatteras take some time to explore.
Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Museum, 53536 NC Highway 12 in Frisco
The Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Museum offers a peek into the original settlers of our island home but is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10AM until 5PM, so be sure to consider that when you start planning your winter itinerary. Offering an extensive collection of Native American artifacts, pottery, and jewelry, its colorful creations are a beautiful sight to see. If you are visiting during a warmer winter day, be sure to explore the nature trails that are an integral part of the museum experience, offering wide open spaces, benches for resting, and trees, bushes, and plants which are all labeled so you can learn about the natural beauty of Cape Hatteras as you wander.
Hatteras Island Ocean Center, 57204 NC Highway 12, Mile Marker 71 in Hatteras
The Hatteras Island Ocean Center is a great place to visit any time of the year, offering an education center that your children will love (education can be entertaining and the center does a great job of both) and a variety of outdoor activities in the spring, summer, and fall months that include kayak tours and marsh walks. Open weekdays from noon until 5PM, this is another wonderful adventure featuring an exhibit hall and a gift shop that is a great place to purchase souvenirs for the littles in your life.

Reason #5: Finding Peace and Comfort in Our Lighthouse View Retreats
Our favorite reason for visiting Cape Hatteras in the winter is, of course, our favorite reason for visiting Cape Hatteras at every other time of the year as well. Our Lighthouse View rooms, suites, and cottages have been the perfect place for visitors from all over the world to come home to at the end of every day of their North Carolina vacation for nearly eight decades, and in all those years, we have learned a few things.
We have learned that people want to feel that they are wanted, that their needs are catered to, and that style is never chosen over comfort. As you relax, play, and savor the serenity of our seaside escapes, you may be curious as to what it would be like to visit during all the other seasons. We’ve created a mini guide to the spaces we offer, giving you a peek inside a vacation experience you will never forget in the paragraphs below.
Lighthouse View Rooms
When Lighthouse View opened for the first time in 1952, it was just a single building with a number of Cape Hatteras motel rooms, and although we’ve stayed true to the underlying heart of Cape Hatteras, we have definitely updated and modernized over the years. Today, our rooms will be serene spaces, mostly facing the sea (although a few will offer pool views) and equipped with state of the art televisions, microwaves, mini fridges, coffee makers, and the warm vibe that lets guests know they are welcomed.
Lighthouse View Suites
Our Cape Hatteras suites are larger than our rooms, offering small kitchens, dining areas, and a separate living room that is perfect for movie or game nights with the family. Less expensive than a cottage and still offering room for up to five guests, the suites are also mostly ocean view spaces, although a few feature few pool views. Both our rooms and suites will have access to on-site laundry, making them great choices for longer vacations as well.
Lighthouse View Cottages
The Cape Hatteras cottage rentals we are so proud of will help make your beach vacation dreams come true, offering generously sized windows, patios that are ideal for watching the sunset from, and a vacation experience that could have come straight from the pages of your favorite beach book. For those who want to make their beach life their real life, our cottages are available to rent for as long as you need, and many of our cottages, suites, and rooms are pet friendly, allowing you to bring your entire family along for your winter adventures on Cape Hatteras.

Your annual family vacation has the possibility of being the one that you compare all others against simply because you chose Cape Hatteras for your destination and our Lighthouse View beachy retreats for your accommodations. This area is one that families adore, encouraging them to return year after year, to discover how everything and nothing has changed, and to re-remember how comfortable it felt to stay in our beachfront escapes. If this is your first year traveling with your family, our family-friendly itinerary when visiting Cape Hatteras offers tips to make all your vacation dreams come true!
Start Every Day at the Beach
It is highly likely that you are reading this now because you have planned a winter visit to Cape Hatteras, and you might have imagined that this would mean you wouldn’t spend much time at the beach. It is true that the water will be too cold to swim, and you will probably need a jacket to explore comfortably, but every day will be the best day when you and your family start out your day at the beach!
A walk along shore’s edge at sunrise—or any time, really—will change your perspective about life’s mysteries, and as you walk, you will talk. You will find yourself discussing the cute new boy at school with your teenage daughter, the fact that your tween thinks he may have found something that he wants to do for the rest of his life, and that your spouse is up for a new job. Or you may say nothing, letting the roar of the surf soothe the anxious parts of your soul as your kids run ahead, stopping every few feet to pick up a shell, a stone, some sea glass, carefully placing each object in their pockets.

Find the Restaurant Where You Feel Like a Regular
Lunch is often something we grab in between adventures, dinner can be a celebration of a special occasion, but breakfast is when we want to find that place we feel comfortable, especially on vacation, and in Cape Hatteras, when you want to feel like a regular as you eat delicious and hearty breakfast dishes, Sonny’s Waterfront Restaurant is where you want to be. Located at 57947 North Carolina Highway 12 and offering the South’s best breakfast foods that include ham steaks, grits, and of course, giant biscuits that are light, fluffy, and addictive, the low cost of the meal may surprise you, and the stunning water views will make you never want to leave. Yes, our cottages and suites do offer fully equipped kitchens, and our hotel rooms are furnished with mini-fridges, coffee makers, and microwaves, but Sonny’s is the spot you will want to return to for breakfast many, many times during your visit.

The Family That Road Trips Together
The thought of a road trip may be a little frightening when traveling with children, but road trips in the Outer Banks often involve a ferry, ensuring that your children will remain fascinated and happy to explore. A visit to Ocracoke Island will thrill, even if it is a longer trip than we normally recommend, as there are two choices for the ferry you will take; one is only for pedestrians and bicyclists, while the other accepts vehicles. The Ocracoke Express Ferry (the one without vehicles) is a seasonal one, so if your visit is during the winter months, you will have to drive on the regular ferry, which is an experience in itself.
Once you arrive on Ocracoke, you can spend the day viewing the banker ponies that have lived here for centuries, take family pictures in front of the Ocracoke lighthouse, or explore the British Cemetery, a small quiet burial ground for four Commonwealth soldiers from World War II. Lunch at the Ocracoke Oyster Company, located at 621 Irvin Garrish Highway, promises to offer a delicious midday break, offering a seafood-centric menu that also includes American BBQ dishes that will ensure that no faces or comments will be made by your kids about the sliminess of an oyster.
You’ll Never Want to Leave
There are some places in this world that just feel like home, and we at Lighthouse View have worked really hard to make our cottages, suites, and rooms be one of those places. Offering comfort and tranquility that will be much appreciated after a hard day of adventuring in the Outer Banks, our charming spaces will welcome your family with warmth, encouraging you and yours to relax a little longer. Reserve your favorite Cape Hatteras retreat today and discover all the things we do to make sure that you will never want to leave!

Cape Hatteras at Christmas
Christmas in Cape Hatteras feels like a gentle exhale. Spending time here during the holidays allows you to slow down and take it all in without the bustling crowds of summer. The island gets a whole lot cozier, perfect for spending Christmas by the coast. Walk along the beach, clearing your mind and preparing your heart for happy moments with the ones who matter most. Shop local, wandering Hatteras Village that gets dolled up it all its Christmas finery, with twinkle lights and decorations.
Packing for Your Christmas at the Cape
Is winter normally cold and snowy where you live? You’ll appreciate getting a break from that during your last-minute Christmas vacation to Cape Hatteras. The weather is cool but comfortable, with daytime highs in the 50s and 60s. It feels warmer, especially in the sun. At the end of the parade, everyone gathers at the Hatteras Community Center for holiday treats like hot cocoa, cookies, and more.
There are also Christmas festivities being held at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum for their Holidays on Hatteras event. It’s a fun, family-friendly and free celebration full of live music, craft stations, raffles and prizes, refreshments, holiday exhibits and the chance to tour the museum.

Good Winds Seafood & Wine Bar
Good Winds Seafood and Wine Bar in Avon is offering a Thanksgiving buffet that features Thanksgiving classics and delicious seafood dishes. Start with a fresh shrimp cocktail and a plate of green salad and toppings from the salad station. Then grab some of the roasted turkey with giblet gravy or smoked ham with mango orange glaze. Is your mouth watering yet? Add sides like roasted garlic whipped potatoes, candied yams, stuffing collards and fresh rolls with butter, and you will be as stuffed as the turkey! Complete your meal with a sweet finish of chocolate cake or pumpkin pie. In order to savor all this deliciousness, you need to make a reservation, so make yours today!

Café Pamlico
Reservations are also highly recommended at our next option for Thanksgiving dinner in Cape Hatteras. Café Pamlico sprinkles plenty of seafood options and fresh new flavors into their Thanksgiving menu. Start with harvest quinoa salad, autumn Caesar, sweet potato crab bisque, and shrimp and crab deviled eggs. Choose an entrée of oven-roasted turkey breast, Southern-style ham, shrimp and scallop with grits, autumn harvest risotto, and crab mac and cheese. Adding their granny smith apple sausage and sage stuffing to every bite just completes the flavor profile of Thanksgiving. The menu is creative, fresh, and no doubt scrumptious.
Lone Cedar Café
Take a little Thanksgiving drive from Cape Hatteras to Nags Head for our next spot. Lone Cedar Café has a Thanksgiving menu that won’t disappoint. Seafood is the star of the show, and even on Thanksgiving it’s all done very well. Highlights include shrimp and grits, bacon-wrapped scallops, and pan-blackened local catch, served up with holiday mains like oven-roasted turkey and chef-carved prime rib of beef au jus. Round out your meal with classic sides such as sage dressing, whipped red potatoes, collard greens, sweet potato crunch, and cranberry sauce. And you’ve come to the right place if you have a sweet tooth. Complete the feast with a slice of Hershey bar cake, key lime pie, banana pudding, or pumpkin cheesecake. All are decadent and divine. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are encouraged. Make a reservation so you’re not standing outside watching everyone eat.
Diamond Shoals
Back in Cape Hatteras is Diamond Shoals, which is sticking to the traditions and keeping the menu simple and enjoyable. Plates of turkey or ham come topped with grilled pineapple and are served with all your favorite Thanksgiving sides. Every meal comes with a choice of homemade pumpkin or pecan pie. If you want some variety and don’t feel like turkey or ham, Diamond Shoals is still offering their full regular menu so you can satisfy your unique craving this Thanksgiving.

Cape Hatteras is a special kind of place that is meant for slowing down and enjoying the rhythm of the ocean. If you’re in the middle of planning a getaway to the coast, you might already be dreaming of the endless blue horizon, sweet sea breezes, majestic lighthouses, and seafood aplenty! Are your suitcases packed already? No? Well then, this is the blog for you. It’s a travel checklist with everything you should think to pack for a trip to Cape Hatteras. We’ll cover apparel, comfort items, and necessary items for any excursions you may take. Follow these tips to pack efficiently and enjoy your visit to Cape Hatteras without the burden of a heavy suitcase full of things you didn’t end up using.
The Right Outfit for the Activity
As with most instances in life, we usually dress for the activity we’ll be engaging in. If we’re going to the beach, we’ll wear a swimsuit. Working out? Active wear? Date night? Dress it up a little bit. We wear the outfit that matches the activity. So, before you consider putting anything in your suitcase, do you know exactly what’s planned for your trip to Cape Hatteras?
Are you here to just lounge by the beach and not go anywhere? (There’s nothing wrong with this option, and honestly, it will be easy for you to pack!) Just gather your swimsuits, favorite lounge outfits, a comfy pair of shoes, and you’re ready.
But for those of us who like to explore and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, you will need to pack accordingly. The goal is to be casual and comfortable, with layers that can be added or removed with the days temperature. Maybe you have a kiteboarding session planned, you’ll want some swim shorts and a moisture-wicking top that can dry quickly while protecting your skin from the salty water as you surf. Or you might be kayaking or paddleboarding along the Pamlico Sound. Water shoes, adequate sun protection, and breathable shirts and pants can keep you from overheating.

Cape Hatteras evenings often call for a cozy hoodie or a lightweight windbreaker. This is especially true if you plan on sitting around a bonfire or taking a late-night walk on the beach. Choose the right shoes that can support you during any adventure. Sturdy sandals or tennis shoes can be great for exploring local nature preserves, walking the boardwalk, or exploring the neighboring towns of the Outer Banks. Your feet will thank you and your plans won’t be ruined by a day wearing bad shoes.
Practical Comfort Items You’ll Be Grateful For
Comfort items can make your visit feel more relaxed. Don’t forget your travel toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, hair products, toothbrush and paste, sunscreen, contact solution, skincare, and makeup. These items will keep you looking and feeling your best on Cape Hatteras. And you won’t have to make an extra trip to the store because you forgot something! Contain phone, camera and other device chargers in one handy pouch so you don’t leave them behind.
Consider also bringing a book or Kindle to read as you lounge by the beach. Instead of being forced to endlessly scroll on your phone, you can fill your mind with a good story as you soak up a beautifully blue ocean view. A portable beach blanket or camp chair that can set up easily will make moments by the water even easier.
Also, a reusable insulated water bottle is worth its space in your bag. Stay hydrated for all your Cape Hatteras activities. A dry pouch or waterproof bag is another good thing to have. This will be great at keeping your phone, wallet, and keys safe from water and sand.
Bug spray is another item you might not be thinking of bringing, but it can come in handy when you’re out in nature, fishing, or hiking along marsh trails.
Are you in town to fish? If you find yourself on a fishing excursion, you’ll be happy you packed a portable cooler to keep you catch fresh. This can also come in handy for bringing food items to the beach or packing drinks for time out on the water.
