Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

The natural beauty of the Outer Banks plays a large part in why it is the dream vacation destination spot for travelers from all over the world, and we have all taken a solemn oath to preserve the landscape, the sea, and the creatures that inhabit both. Pea Island National Refuge is just one way in which we do so. Located in Rodanthe, one leg of the tri-villages of Salvo, Waves, and Rodanthe, the refuge protects the most vulnerable species, such as loggerhead turtles and bald eagles, while also providing a safe spot for the non-endangered wildlife to call home. And just as you will never have been so comfortable as you are when staying in our Lighthouse View retreats, the wildlife that inhabit the refuge seem to understand that they are protected and safe. This guide to the refuge will help give you a little something extra to look forward to.

Located at 14500 North Carolina Highway 12 in Rodanthe

For nearly 80 years the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge has served as safe harbor for birds, sea creatures, and every local species in between, and during your visit you may be able to see them all while hiking, kayaking, or fishing. (Yes, fishing is allowed on the refuge.) This refuge isn’t the largest, its length spanning almost 13 miles and at its widest point it is only about one mile wide, but it is home (or winter home) to over 350 species of birds, including raptors, seagulls, and more than a few brown pelicans. Its diverse habitat encompasses marshes, beaches, and sand dunes, however, and you may encounter loggerhead turtles, and a large variety of other mammals, birds, and reptiles.

The Visitor Center

Whenever we travel beyond the air conditioned coolness of home and car, we are often surprised at just how little we know about the flora and the fauna of the area in which we are traveling. But for visitors to the refuge, this will not be a problem, as the visitor’s center will ensure that you know all there is to know about the flora, the fauna, and the landscape in which all this wonderful beauty shines.
