Windsurfing in Cape Hatteras

There are many ways to experience the waters that border our Cape Hatteras town and so we at Lighthouse View thought today would be a great day to delve deeper into one of those ways, introducing our guests to the joys of windsurfing in Cape Hatteras. Offering the sensation of flying, while also offering a soft place to land if the “flight” doesn’t go as planned, Cape Hatteras windsurfing may become your next obsession. This guide to the sport and where you can find the equipment you need will help you start planning all the fun you will have during your Outer Banks vacation in our Lighthouse View retreats!

What Is Windsurfing?

Chances are you have heard of surfing, but you may not have heard of windsurfing, or at the very least, not know much about the sport. Windsurfing is one of our favorite water sports, involving a board that is similar to a surfboard and a sail that is planted in the board, catching the wind to send you skimming across the water of the Atlantic Ocean! A relatively new sport, windsurfing appeared on the world stage in the late 1960s, joining the Olympic platform in the 1980s. Also called sailboarding or boardsailing (for obvious reasons), it can be a little difficult to pick up the sport, but once you do, it will become a favorite!

Want to Learn?

Like most sports and activities these days, you can learn anything by watching a YouTube video, but if you want that one on one experience, Hatteras Island Surf Shop, located at 25410 North Carolina Highway 12 in Waves, offers an introduction to windsurfing class that will get you started on this thrilling sport. Your instructor has been teaching the sport for over 40 years and probably has forgotten more than you will ever know about it and his attention to detail will make you feel safe and ready to strike out on your own at class’s end.

Renting the Gear

Windsurfing in Cape Hatteras has been around for more than a minute, and it could be that you already know how to surf but just need to rent the equipment, and if that is the case, Ride Hatteras Surf Shop, 40168 North Carolina Highway 12 in Avon is probably the closest rental shop to our Lighthouse View retreats. We normally recommend them for windsurfing lessons as well, but at the time of this writing they are experiencing staffing issues and had to temporarily offering lessons, but that could change by the time you arrive.
